Carney has a chance to show us there’s actually still a difference between his government and the one we’d have if Poilievre had won the election. Will he take it? Federal funding to help LGBTQ rights groups survive the attacks on their humanity is about to expire. He can do something about it:

The separation question has consumed most of the attention around the province's October 19th referendum. The immigration-related questions also on the ballot might be just as dangerous and divisive.

Oh wow In May, I reported Alberta separatists were using an app developed by GOP operatives with ties to US ambassador Pete Hoekstra @theglobeandmail.com now reports the same operatives flew to Calgary on a private jet for a secret meeting with separatist leaders: pressprogress.ca/alberta-sepa...
The pitch began with a prayer.
On an afternoon in late January, Mitch Sylvestre, the leader of Alberta's most prominent separatist organization, gathered with three of his lieutenants in a boardroom not far from the executive hangars at the Calgary International Airport, where private jets shuttle in and out of the city away from prying eyes.
It was a few hours before thousands of Albertans would gather near the city centre at a rally to launch the separatist campaign. But this meeting, convened behind closed doors a half-hour drive away, was invite only.
The Alberta Prosperity Project chose the location to accommodate its guests, Republican political strategists from Michigan who helped Donald Trump win the state in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
The American delegation travelled to Calgary to sell them on software developed for Republicans to get out the vote - and how it could be used to wrench Alberta from Confederation.
"They were young Christians. Capable, intelligent people," Mr. Sylvestre said. "We prayed before we started the meeting.""There is no secrecy'
One of the key figures behind the Michigan software company has expressed strong views on Alberta.
On July 1, Mr. Born wrote on social media: "On this Canada Day, I hope this is the last year Alberta is part of Canada." He has also called for U.S. annexation of the province.
A hunter, outdoorsman and commercial real estate agent in Grand Rapids, Mr. Born is the stepson of J.C. Huizenga, a wealthy Republican donor and founder of National Heritage Academies, a network of conservative charter schools in the U.S.
Mr. Wierda is the nephew of Erik Prince, who founded and ran the private military contractor Blackwater before it was sold to investors in 2010, and Betsy DeVos, the education secretary during Mr. Trump's first term.

We don't have local out of town fans. The fans from Ottawa or Hamilton etc who do come treat these games as mini vacations. They want to be downtown close to restaurants, bars and the waterfront, not in a hotel near the airport where they have to drive to everything.

The only viable alternatives are the train to Moncton twice a week at about 150 bucks each way, but it's a 4 hr trip. Or the bus, which is like 6 hrs.
100
kurtisme.bsky.social @kurtisme.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Moncton is a 2.5hr drive from Halifax, so one tank of gas will do, and say, two meals at 50 bucks each. So roughly 190 dollars. Airfare, for a 30 minute flight? 875 DOLLARS. Similar for Charlottetown. That is outrageous!
100
kurtisme.bsky.social @kurtisme.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Now consider flying to Sydney NS from Halifax - 5 hr drive each way, so one tank of gas there and a second back - 180 bucks. And let's stop for a meal each way, 100 dollars. So round up, 300 dollars. Airfare? 900 DOLLARS RETURN - in the SAME PROVINCE.
100
kurtisme.bsky.social @kurtisme.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
So that would be approx 1300 bucks. Driving - gas, the ferry, a hotel each way - I figure will cost approx 1200 dollars (200/night for hotel, 200 for gas each way, ferry is 57 each way and I even splurged on a room onboard, 126 each way.). So we're pretty even.
100
kurtisme.bsky.social @kurtisme.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Secondly you picked one of the most difficult cities to reach in Atlantic Canada, so travel is going to be expensive regardless. So assuming I'm going to fly with my partner and we want to take more than a wallet, flights will cost about 650 round trip.
100
kurtisme.bsky.social @kurtisme.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Finally getting around to responding to this. First of all, I didn't say driving was 'way cheaper', I am simply countering your argument that flying is not expensive.

Excellent questions.
Becky Druhan, MLA Lunenburg West (via facebook)
TL This week, we learned Premier Tim Houston has included the MacKay Bridge among the Nova Scotia projects being pitched to global investors at the Canada Investment Summit in Toronto.
Until last year, Halifax Harbour Bridges operated on a self-funded model: bridge users paid tolls, and that revenue stayed in the system to operate, maintain and ultimately replace the bridges.
Government eliminated the tolls, shifted those costs to taxpayers and dissolved the Bridge Commission.
Now it is looking for private investment.
Private investors aren't charities. They expect a return.
I asked whether the Minister of Public Works Fred Tilley could explain how an investor would get a return without tolls - whether he could name any example of a privately financed bridge in Canada where users don't pay tolls?
The Minister spent his response time commenting on his perception of my emotional state. He did not answer the question.
When I got the floor again, I gave government an example.
The Pont Samuel-De Champlain Bridge in Montréal is toll-free and was delivered through a 34-year, $4.2-billion public-private partnership. The Auditor General found that the private-financing model cost taxpayers $250 million more than traditional financing would have.
That brings us back to the MacKay Bridge.brings us back to the MacKay Bridge.
Private investors do not invest for free. They expect to recover their investment and earn a return.
So Nova Scotians deserve to know:
? Who would ultimately pay the investor - bridge users, taxpayers, or both?
? Was bringing in a private investor the plan all along? If not, when did the Premier decide that private investors should make money from our bridge at Nova Scotia taxpayers' expense?
Minister of Finance John Lohr MLA Kings North rose to speak in response to my supplementary question.
Do you think he answered it?

There’s a still from a video of Becky Druhan talking during Question Period
