Good morning Tokyo I just saw this awesome chart about dinosaurs and suddenly felt inspired. Feel free to tell me what I missed. 😇

Chart with 4 quadrants
Japan + Seems like Japan:

Bowing
Outward politeness
Xenophobia
Cherry blossoms
Amazing public transportation*
Relative public safety**
Patriarchy
My amazing toilet is a meme
If you want a gun you have to build it yourself
Best and most photogenic stratovolcano ever
*excluding 12/29-1-5 and 4/28-5/5
**for men

Not Japan + seems like Japan:

Homogenous society
Dressing with your boobs out
Memoirs of a Geisha
Layers of mystery
Normal stuff but deeper
Impossible-to-learn language
Kintsugi: a thing everyone does
workplace zen
Everything is cheap
“Just like bladerunner”
Blind obedience
Used panty vending machines

Japan + doesn’t seem like Japan:

Grassroots feminism
Gay people existing
Lawless bicyclists
Your neighbor who isn’t racist
Japanese speakers of other nationalities
Hole-in-the-ground public toilets
Crappy salaries
Karoshi
People protesting stuff*
*though largely older generations

Not Japan + doesn’t seem like Japan:

China

The first report when an earthquake measures over Shindo 3 is the Shindo flash report (showing only stations of Shindo 3 and higher), followed by the magnitude report, and then the 各地 report. Do you have the Strong Motion Monitor layer enabled? I got my notification through there as it was happening

nah, after the most recent waffle incident i have to agree that bluesky the company really does not care about the users that made it what it is right now and telling people "you can leave" is the worst PR strategy i have ever seen the users that made this what it is can't just leave as of now

Palworld consumed my weekend. Surprisingly fun game despite the painful lack of polish and abundance of bugs. I'd have a better outlook on the future of the game if its developer didn't keep announcing more new early access games while the main franchise hasn't even had time to mature

Material 3 Expressive is literally the ugliest fucking thing I have ever seen

000

The mere existence of frameworks like Zustand to further simplify the core lifecycle system of React should've been the canary in the coal mine that the way the React team chose to go about lifecycles was doomed from the start.

000

I honestly feel a deep level of shame as a web developer, a React developer. Using React is like a cheat code to doing things on easy mode, and if you aren't a complete master at it, almost all of your code will be a performance hog that melts any web browser within an inch of your life.

Systems programmers have to be the coolest people on earth. Kernel developers, people who work with low-level languages and people who make computers do things with the aim of more performance and better efficiency, are all masterful wizards who are cool as fuck

It may literally be faster to reimplement this one super complex form in tanstack forms than to continue debugging and fixing the react-hook-form implementation…

000

Kurisu @kurisu.dev · 22/08/2025

If I don't meet this deadline, it's 100% because of react-hook-form

I have a local Jellyfin server with 24-bit FLAC files of all my favourite songs, but I can't use that on the go because my home network doesn't have that kind of bandwidth. Plus I like the "wrapped" at the end of the year and the social aspects of music listening lately as well that I'd lose... Sigh

Also switched from deck.blue to Skeetdeck. God, deck.blue was so fucking slow. No doubt from using Flutter under the hood. No one should ever use Flutter for *anything*. Just wish Skeetdeck had auto-refresh.
