Okay now that I’ve had time to sit with it, I think I’ve found the words to get my feelings about the ending right. It’s not that the ending doesn’t make sense narratively, because it does. It absolutely does. And it is a happy ending.
Crowley has Aziraphale, he has his stars, he and everyone else has free will. He really does have everything he’s ever wanted. And Aziraphale is able to love him openly without fear. It really is the life that they deserve and it really is a happy and romantic ending.

I think the reason it was so hard to swallow initially is because that ending really drove home the point that Crowley and Aziraphale could’ve never been together in their universe. And I mean, that’s the whole point of the show, it’s not like that hasn’t been spelled out from the very beginning. If they could’ve been together, they would have been. It’s exactly why they spent 6000 years stealing moments and never taking about it. Why they were trying to get away from Heaven and Hell the whole time.
They couldn’t be together. It’s that simple. And if they restored the universe to the way it was, they were never going to be able to get together. And sure, Gabriel and Beelzebub managed it but there’s one big difference there.
Gabriel and Beelzebub don’t give a shit about humanity. That’s their entire thing! So they couldn’t run off together and be happy, just like Aziraphale said.

And they couldn’t keep the universe the way it was because they’d still have Heaven and Hell, both of which are toxic, as Crowley said.so narratively, they made the only choice they could that would let them be together.
But the reason it hurts so bad is because we watched them spend 6000 years yearning for each other. We were rooting for them to win a losing battle. We had hope in the idea of overcoming the impossible. But things are called impossible for a reason.
And really, at the end of the day, they got the happiest ending they could’ve gotten in their own universe. They got to leave it on their own terms, together. They got to defend humanity one last time.
So yeah, I do like the ending. And all the building blocks for it have been there the entire time. The way Hell kept dragging Crowley back, proving they couldn’t properly retire from being an angel and a demon.

Crowley being tortured for being good. Aziraphale having to constantly choose. It’s been there from the very beginning. And in the end, they still did find a way to overcome the impossible. They found a way to be together the way they always wanted to.
It may be a different universe but it’s still them and they still love each other and now they can have each other wholly and without fear. So they did it in the end. They did it and they are happy together and I can live with that.
