In the morning, his stomach rumbled. It was time to sacrifice another one of his precious protein bars. He pulled his bag closer to raid it and that was when he noticed the compact green packet next to it.

That definitely hadn’t been there last night. It might have been dark but he’d been aware of his surroundings, and he was pretty sure he’d have remembered a bundle of moss tied up with twisted stems of ivy.

“…the hell..?”

Impulse and instinct battled briefly. Vague memories of some found-footage horror hinted darkly at grotesque offerings of gore and teeth. Get that thing away from you before it —

Before what? Before it marked him with a curse? Drew the attention of creeping woodland monsters? It’s just some moss. Maybe kids messing about, which is great — you can’t be that far from people. That or you’re being targeted by the rare International Express Delivery Grouse.

Some busy days ahead! The printer has delivered a sturdy box of unbound pages and I must look out my needles and get to work. The finished diary — which will comprise 264 pages of observations and incidents, from before time until the present day, captivating art by

Pages 258 and 259 of the diary, bearing line drawings of flowers and a coloured picture of Crowley and myself in our garden.

A corner of page 153 reveals a snippet of text:
