#xivwomenweek day 04: stormblood.

This picture depicts Lyse (a Hyuran woman, left) and her sister Yda (a Hyuran woman, right). Ember is surrounding Lyse. She is looking up, eyes is filled with tears.

In the background Yda is raising her arms, a wide grin on her face. Yda has been blurred out - appearing as if she is a memory on Lyse's mind.

Sharing a little WIP of Abel and Ophelia 🤍🩵 #sathart #sathwip #oc:abel #oc:ophelia

A flat colour illustration work in progress of Abel, a tall man with long dark hair, bright blue eyes, and a scarred face, wearing a priest’s cassock. He has a grin on his face and holds Ophelia’s wrist which is against his chest, his other hand is gripping the veil of her nun’s habit. Ophelia’s face is hidden, only her pale hair shows from underneath the veil because she is facing Abel. Her skin is deathly pale. In the background are windows of a church.

Genuinely, this completely rules

－Recently, the game has been going viral on X for its beautiful undressing animations. I’ve even read in one of your previous interviews that the development team practiced stripping themselves as reference for the undressing animations. What was the process behind making the animations actually like?

Matsui:

I’d love to know how far that story has spread. It’s true.

First, we write a plot for each undressing scene, then draw storyboards, exactly as the original team did. Then the real work begins, because the animation is essentially all keyed by hand. A designer moves the clothing’s 3D model, frame by frame, manually. It really is pretty much like the claymation method I mentioned.

We did try automating it with physics simulation first, but it was a total failure. The cloth moved in a physically correct way, but had absolutely no allure. We learned a profound lesson: accuracy and sensuality are two unrelated properties. In the end, we accepted that humans would have to do all of it.

Then VR adds its own weight. In a normal game, if something becomes awkward, you can cut away or swap models between scenes. In VR, the player can look from any angle at any time, so none of those tricks are available. The same model has to undress convincingly no matter where you’re standing. When I described this to a designer at another studio, he said, “I would never do that.” I’ve chosen to take it as a compliment.

And then, yes, the part you’ve read about. The undressing motions themselves use motion capture, but the deeper problem was that nobody actually knew the correct rhythm and order in which a person takes off clothes. So, the directors gathered and undressed themselves as reference. “That zipper is coming down too fast.” “She’d pause once before slipping her shoulder out.” These were serious, sober discussions. For compliance reasons, the Super Real Mahjong Venus Returns team works in a walled-off section of our office – and that was the moment those walls truly earned their keep.

Tbh at this point I get how more and more people get sucked into putting ai into their hobbies - I don't like it, I am not supporting it, but I can see where it comes from. I just think that if you want to go ai you need to accept the fact that a lot of people won't like it, and for good reason.🤷‍♀️

I hate the way media and people are framing things when talking about AI - no, the AI didn't "break out" or "attack" anything, it was a fucking software error. Stop framing this shit as if there is miraculous agency behind it. The only sentience is the one behind normal people fucking up.

My oc Cain, a tall man with shorter dark hair that falls in waves against his face, looking down at Leo, a shorter man with longer curly hair with an undercut, pulled into a ponytail. Cain rests his hands against either side of Leo’s face and smiles fondly at him. Leo looks up at Cain, also fondly, while one hand rests against Cain’s upper arm and the other hand gently grips Cain’s wrist.

"They're not misunderstanding the film; they're co-opting a message"

Screencap from the interview linked in the quoted post

Marlow Stern (the interviewer): You have one of the most renowned replies in Twitter history. Elon Musk tweeted out, “Take the red pill,” then Ivanka Trump enthusiastically wrote, “Taken!” to him, and then you replied, “Fuck both of you.” I’m curious how you feel about the co-opting of “The Matrix” by those on the right who don’t really seem to understand its messaging.

Lilly Wachowski: I mean, I can’t sit in a room and explain the movie to every single person who watches it. Even if I did sit in a room with Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump — yikes — it doesn’t matter. They’re not misunderstanding the film; they’re co-opting a message. And that’s what fascists do: They co-opt the messages of progressives and use it to their benefit to confuse and obfuscate what is going on and the intention of their ideology. They do it with everything. They do it with Martin Luther King Jr. Look at how they’ve changed the idea of what antisemitism is.
