Really truly hate to be the bearer of bad news here, but Sankey charts and Jim Crow are roughly contemporaries :/ :/ :/ Arguably the most famous Sankey of all time was drawn by a French civil engineer in the late 1860s (See: Minard map!)

Relevant to today's conversation about AI's inherent sexism, here's an email from cognitive psychologist and early AI theorist Roger Schank, arguing to Epstein that women can't be truly intelligent, because they care too much about what other people think.

Subject: there is a simpler explanation about women and intelligence
intelligence comes about in part from real focus (goal-directed
(this is why you have the absent minded professor caricature)
it is a rare woman who is not first and foremost focussed on what
thinking and feeling about her
hard to be brilliant if you are worrying if you look fat or why

I'm especially interested in people who have experience... - integrating modern AI/LLMs into data workflows; - wrangling very messy, real-world datasets; - building big, public-service datasets; and/or - working in a newsroom setting. If that sounds like you, feel free to reach out!

Although the title is "data scientist/analyst", the role is really a mixture of a data science, data analysis and engineering work.

It's worth pointing out that the people in the country on visas who are allowed to access public funds are primarily people in two groups: 1. Those on family visas – a majority of whom are the spouses and children of British citizens 2. Refugees

What constitutes "public funds"? Well you can't even apply for the Winter Fuel Allowance if you're on most qualifying visas, but I doubt the Home Secretary knows that. www.gov.uk/government/p...

Why do I say that? Here's what she said about increasing the qualifying period for ILR, despite the fact that for almost all qualifying visa types, you're not allowed to access benefits.

As a UK resident who has paid for two degrees, five visas, and more than 10 years of the NHS surcharge since I moved here at 19, this is infuriating. As a journalist, it's alarming that the Home Sec clearly does not understand the system she says needs to be reformed. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

they didn’t leak it to make the shooter look innocent, but to make the victim look guilty. not guilty of a crime. guilty of having a visibly queer wife. guilty of liberalism. guilty of opposing the regime. they don’t seek to exonerate themselves, only to demonstrate who deserves to die.

the nyt says that no version of events in minneapolis can be "verified independently." but that's not true! there are multiple videos proving that the ICE version of events is a total lie. maybe the nyt can, y'know, watch one of them? www.nytimes.com/live/2026/01...
Tricia McLaughlin, a Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman, said in a statement that an agent had opened fire after a woman “weaponized her vehicle” in an attempt to kill federal officers. Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis called her account “bullshit” in a news conference, describing the shooting instead as “an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying, getting killed.”

Neither description of the encounter could be immediately verified independently. Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat whose congressional district includes the shooting scene, described the person who was killed as a “legal observer.”

Immigrants are… a) almost uniformly not allowed access to public funds; b) charged doubly for using the NHS (immigration surcharge and tax); c) and required to make more than £41k and pay upwards of £10k/pp by the time they’re granted ILR. What part of that is not earning their right?

This is so obviously true. It’s also – not for nothing – bonkers stupid as a policy. The reason the data shows so many foreign grads don’t transition to employment visas “as intended” is because Labour has made it even more difficult – and even more EXPENSIVE!!!! – to sponsor workers.
