Latest w/ Bonny Brewer and Raghu. We evolved different DNA repair mutants to investigate the mechanism of a gene amplification we've been working on for many years. We got all sorts of interesting alternate outcomes, including these cool subtelomeric repeats in Ku mutants dx.plos.org/10.1371/jour...

People underestimate how difficult it is to identify contamination sources. Even with a fully funded government agency.

🧬 ⛓️‍💥 Our paper is now out in @natsmb.nature.com ! We examined the fate of replication forks that collapse at single-strand DNA breaks (SSBs) in vertebrates 🐸, comparing the consequences of collapse at single vs convergent forks. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Here the authors show that collapse of single replication forks causes recombination, end fusions or degradation but does not restart DNA synthesis. In contrast, collapse of convergent forks completes...

The “it’s not that bad, science is still happening” crowd loves to ignore the ways in which this admin’s crackdown disproportionately affects certain kinds of research and certain kinds of researchers and I am so fucking annoyed

Our latest collaboration with Karthik Hullahalli's team on bacterial barcoding is now out! We developed a way to measure dissemination dynamics that controls for independent colonization events. This more accurately assesses how bacteria spread between tissues. journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...

Y'all, I'm away from lab traveling and my trainees sent me this via slack: they all dressed up as me for Halloween (Winter Kevin, Summer Kevin, and "I wear this all the time" Kevin)! My trainees rock and having a lab is a lot of fun!
