I'm reading Anne Conway this weekend for class, so here's my contribution to bsky's philosophy and AI debates: The computer has a soul. Why? Because everything has a soul, because only spirit is metaphysically fundamental and matter is nothing but the privation of spirit.

Today I got to watch my first undergrad mentee, Tessa Brunnenmeyer, SUCCESSFULLY defend her dissertation! Hers is a fascinating & timely project on Margaret Cavendish, philosophical genre, & early science/humanities discussions. It was awesome. Congratulations Dr. Brunnenmeyer!

I think I could put together a really cool class on philosophical modality, epistemic bubbles/echo chambers, and logical reasoning based on the INSANE free-associations in the shows on the “History” Channel.

Here is a blurb about the book!
When higher education recenters philosophy, students can become more than skilled workers: they can be virtuous people who promote the flourishing of those around them.

Narratives surrounding higher education, particularly in the United States, tend to reduce the value of post-secondary education to vocational or economic goods. As a consequence, STEM and pre-professional programs thrive, while programs in the arts and humanities continue to be diminished, at least in part due to their perceived “impracticality” and lack of obvious alignment with labor markets. Kristopher G. Phillips argues that reducing the value and aims of higher education to narrowly prescribed vocational or economic ends dehumanizes students, robs them of the opportunity to be transformed—personally, epistemically, and civically—by their education, and leaves them ill-prepared to address the distinctly human aspects of their lives. The solution, he argues, is to reconceptualize both academic philosophy and higher education generally; philosophy should return to its Socratic roots and focus on the cultivation of an excellent character. Phillips articulates a vision of a philosophically-grounded, transformational education that facilitates student flourishing. Drawing parallels between, and teasing out assumptions inherited from, the scientific revolution in 17th and 18th-century -Europe, Phillips demonstrates that education can and should help students become the sort of people who embody personal virtue and promote the flourishing of their communities.

I just submitted the final draft of my first book, *Personal Virtue, Public Happiness: Rehumanizing Education through Early Modern Philosophy.* I’m really proud of how it turned out and I look forward to seeing it in print (Jan or Feb?)! It’ll be published by Bloomsbury.

But when they texted “STOP” I would respond with fabricated stats about how many bills Hoover had stopped while in office, or about how many stops he made on his campaign. Eventually I got blocked. This was years ago and I still think it was funny.

I get a lot of spam texts. One time, I responded immediately as if I were a bot, and by texting me they had signed up for daily updates about Herbert Hoover. I started by texting each day at 9a with actual facts from Wikipedia. I always included the “text STOP to unsubscribe”.

I taught a seminar this semester where my students and I read a bunch of stuff that I read in preparation for writing a book. Then we read a draft of my book. It. Was. Awesome!! I learned so much from my students, & they made INCREDIBLE memes about my (forthcoming!) book. I’ll post some soon.

One cool thing about having a partner who is also a philosopher is that we get to think, write, and publish together.

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up. I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

I told my doctor that I was trying to eat better. Eating more salads and chicken, less pizza and such. He responded, “have all the salad you want, but if you’re drowning it in ranch or blue cheese don’t kid yourself about being healthy.” I said nothing about dressings, he just assumed. 🤷‍♂️

I still assign final grades, and I give copious feedback on where and how to improve. Numbers and letter grades don’t tell a student how to do better. Ugh. This is such lazy writing.

It’s hilarious because the first paragraph pretty well describes me, right up to the, “they are frauds” and then literally everything that follows is a straw-person of the actually thoughtful pedagogical choices I make. But also, my rejection of grades has nothing to do with “who am I to judge?”

Descartes gave us all the tools we need to survive in an era of misinformation. Simply begin with the understanding that you are real but everything else is fairly likely to be the cruel games of a demon sent to torment you specifically.

I have a productivity app that I use to track my writing time. While I’m not always great about making sure I use it, it’s tracked 77+ hours of writing since Jan. I have somewhere around 40k words, which puts me at ~519.5 words/hour. Can I finish this book by September? We will see!

This is a great thread and I agree with all of it. Reviewing takes a ton of time but it's important work, even when I hate the paper I reviewed. Editors can confirm I send lengthy details about every decision and I'd be wracked with guilt not doing that. It's the entire point of the process!

I’m a recent meta study, we scoured 2550 lists of things with which one fucks. We found a number of things appearing on multiple lists & most things appeared at least once. Conspicuously absent from *all* lists was the Wu Tang Clan. We conclude that Wu Tang Clan is, in fact, nothing to fuck with.
