I like Heidegger’s method for reading philosophy for two reasons: veneration + questioning dialogue is strictly better than “charity”, and it insists on concrete thinking-with a real person over abstract argument over concepts.
"With regard to (2): *A reading and interpretation of a specific treatise.* We want to learn the thinking proper to thinkers by thinking-*along-with* \[_mitdenken_] a particular thinker, and by thoughtfully following him \[_nachdenken_] on his path; that is, not by studying a 'logic' in the traditional way, and not by constructing an empty 'theory' from an equally empty thinking with empty forms, thereby taking up a position that from the beginning is external to the enactment of genuine thought.

"With our aim, on the contrary, to think-along-with a thinking that has already been carried out, it is also already decided that we will not blindly repeat and reconstruct the philosophical thinking in the treatise under discussion. We are rather to take it immediately and continually as an occasion for what characterizes philosophical thinking, that is, as an occasion for *questioning*. The inner condition, however, for a *questioning* dialogue with an essential thinker is veneration, which must be maintained even when a confrontation \[_Auseinandersetzung_] with that thinker is required, and even when it becomes necessary to overcome his fundamental position. In truth, there is no other form of a genuine encounter with the thinking \[6] of a thinker than that of a struggle which puts this very thinking in question." (4--5)

this raises serious questions about the necessary & sufficient conditions of being a nepo baby - can an orphan be a nepo baby - is the nepo from the name? reputation? wealth?

The word "ungrading" is an active present participle. It doesn't mean "not grading." Ungrading acknowledges the existence of grades and invites systemic critique, an undoing or thoughtful dismantling. Not best practices, but fluid, contextual practices to push against an insidious culture of grades.

I can’t overstate how much Lynch shaped my life. Every step of his career is tied to my most vivid memories: growing up weird, falling in love, making a career, and a life, moving across the country, then across the world. His work got me through a pandemic, and all the losses after. Thank you David

I usually am indifferent to celebrity deaths, beyond the pang of general human suffering. But David Lynch hits like David Bowie. Once in a generation talent. An artist in the most robust sense. RIP. May the afterlife be filled with an abundance of cigarettes and film scripts.
