Here is a blurb about the book!
When higher education recenters philosophy, students can become more than skilled workers: they can be virtuous people who promote the flourishing of those around them.

Narratives surrounding higher education, particularly in the United States, tend to reduce the value of post-secondary education to vocational or economic goods. As a consequence, STEM and pre-professional programs thrive, while programs in the arts and humanities continue to be diminished, at least in part due to their perceived “impracticality” and lack of obvious alignment with labor markets. Kristopher G. Phillips argues that reducing the value and aims of higher education to narrowly prescribed vocational or economic ends dehumanizes students, robs them of the opportunity to be transformed—personally, epistemically, and civically—by their education, and leaves them ill-prepared to address the distinctly human aspects of their lives. The solution, he argues, is to reconceptualize both academic philosophy and higher education generally; philosophy should return to its Socratic roots and focus on the cultivation of an excellent character. Phillips articulates a vision of a philosophically-grounded, transformational education that facilitates student flourishing. Drawing parallels between, and teasing out assumptions inherited from, the scientific revolution in 17th and 18th-century -Europe, Phillips demonstrates that education can and should help students become the sort of people who embody personal virtue and promote the flourishing of their communities.

One cool thing about having a partner who is also a philosopher is that we get to think, write, and publish together.
The cover of the book, “Innovations in Teaching Philosophy: A Toolkit for the 21st-Century Classroom” Edited by Brynn F. Welch. The first page of chapter 29, “Virtuous Dialogues in Epistemic Communities: Helping Students Understand the Value of Citations” by Cassie L. Finley and Kristopher G. Phillips.

My extraordinarily long-con has finally paid off! In 2005 I made the decision to pursue grad studies in philosophy because I knew, even then, that I’d eventually have a shot at being cast in a reality show that blends Big Brother and Survivor. So long Academia! Imma be famous!
An email that reads, in part, “Subject: Looking for a teacher for a new TV show I'm casting
Leave a message: Hello Kris! I came across your TikTok page during my search for participants for a new TV show I'm casting. We are looking for a teacher to be one of the contestants.
I've pasted more info below.
The show is a competition/strategy reality show like "Survivor" meets "Big Brother" and includes alliance-building, gameplan strategy, challenges, and eliminations. The last person left wins a cash prize of $100,000. We are looking for people who use the power of persuasion and gift of gab in their daily lives. The email concludes, “All in all, it's a light, fun competition show. I hope you apply!
More information: Filming takes place in March of 2025. Must be a US citizen. Must have a current US Passport or be willing to get one. All travel, accommodations, and meal expenses will be paid for. Participation includes a weekly stipend. ($500 per episode that you are on. To be paid after the show airs.) Winner receives a cash prize of
$100,000. Filming takes 4-6 weeks.
This is not a job, but rather an opportunity to be a contestant on a competitive reality television series.

This lady (@angrycassie.bsky.social) is, without question, the best person in my life. She inspires me to be the best me. I’m so grateful for her. Happy anniversary, Cassie!

Reminding yourself of what Epictetus said about setting appropriate expectations for how things are going to be helps with a mid-December Saturday Costco run.
Football player Travis Kelce is shouting while standing very close to his head coach, Andy Reid, who has his eyes closed and is otherwise showing no response.

Superimposed over Kelce is the phrase, “Dudes at the bathhouse” and over Reid is the name, “Epictetus.”

I’ve been a Lions fan for my whole life. This is their year.
Lions player, Amon-Ra St. Brown does a headstand after scoring a touchdown while a teammate stands behind him with his arms out - forming a T shape. These players are flanked by large F and P letters.

This makes it appear to be “FTP”, a sentiment intended to express distaste for the team from Green Bay.

The red flags are probably not that far off the mark…
This depicts my feed in the manner of a “dating app”. My red flags include: taking pie crust debates too seriously, slipping in philosophical references at awkward times, and “might challenge you to a rap battle.”

Not sure where they got the “spicy fan fiction” thing from, but otherwise, okay… I can see most of this.
A screenshot of the overall “vibe” my account gives off. 92.5% authentic, 88% “thought leader, 85% Philosophy in Teaching, and 78% philosophical humor.

“Like Plato in a Twitterverse rave, where every post has the potential to end with a philosophical mic-drop”Summing up my commitments to philosophical pedagogy, humor, and pop culture commentaries. References to Plato, Aristotle, and Descartes respectively.Evidently my writing style is “a hybrid of a philosophy lecture and a late-night talk show monologue; one moment you're reflecting on the essence of being, the next you're rolling your eyes at a pun.”I putatively have “main character energy” and my secret powers include “reading minds”, creating philosophy inspired memes, and “writing erotic fan fiction”?

That last one is so secret that even I didn’t know about it.

Since bsky is taking off I’m gonna repost the best thing(s) I ever made.
Travis Kelsey (right) yelling at his coach, Andy Reid (left) in very close proximity. Reid appears largely unaffected, with his eyes closed. There is added text over each person. Over Reid it says, “Epictetus” and over Kelsey “dudes at the bath house” The top half shows the logical equivalence rule, material implication (~p v q :: p -> q).

The bottom half shows Dennis Reynolds (left) from the show, It’s always sunny in Philadelphia saying to Mac (right), “… because of the implication”

Here is Octavia, unofficial border collie mascot for Eastern Michigan University.
Black and white border collie sprawled out on a vintage yellow velvet loveseat (with dark wood trim). She is making fairly intense eye contact. Black and white border collie curled up and sleeping in a mid-century modern yellow armchair. The chair is situated in front of a fireplace (left), a bookshelf featuring old books (center) and a globe (right) Black and white border collie perched on a modern orange chair, looking off to the right of the image. A black metal coffee table is just off to the right, and there is a printer on the lower shelf of the table (bottom right).
