Your 'bonus moment of doom' for today: "A major cyberattack targeting commercial refrigeration systems across France ... Rather than shutting systems off, the attackers remotely reprogrammed cooling regulators to force a continuous defrost cycle, driving internal temperatures up to 50C (122F)."

Because a lot of things are shit, here’s a beautiful bug on our back deck & the tops of some tall grasses in our yard for you from yesterday. (& you’re welcome for the alt text on #2.) 10 October 2026, Ann Arbor
Is this a katydid? I think it’s a katydid, green & glorious on our back deck in Ann Arbor.Zoom in past the fuzzy tops of tall grasses in our backyard for the fun birdhouse my husband built! We think this spring a darling brood of baby house wrens were murdered in that birdhouse-cabin by a predator while we were out of town for a week. :(Fuzzy pretty tall-grasses tops in our backyard in Ann Arbor.

As I discussed with @laywilliams.bsky.social intellectual abilities and ideas take time to slowly mature over one's career. Not being picked as the winning horse early on doesn't mean someone is not able to achieve greatness in their craft later, whether they receive awards or not.

*so important*: if you’re voting by mail, assume the USPS will delay because it’s its policy. You can: —put it in drop box —go to counter to watch them postmark in front of you —if you’re dropping it in a mailbox, do it VERY EARLY.

It’s totally demoralizing! Good word! When the language all overlaps between multiple proposals, & they never actually state WHAT THE $ IS FOR. Just buzzword-town. And hoooo the personal essays on applications. It’s exhausting.

I def don't have all the answers as to why there is such a persistent crisis/lull cycle in US orchestras, but one thing I do know from my 25 years at the high end of that business is that WAY too many execs and board leaders are convinced there is a magic sustainability formula hiding somewhere.

Spooky bird stories. My Halloween comic from 2024.
A comic titled Spooky Bird Stories. In panel 1, a turkey vulture is telling stories to other vultures, and it says, "She walked toward the source of the terrible smell. She got closer and closer, and then, to her horror, she saw... No dead body." A black vulture says "No!" and a turkey vulture says "Did someone already eat it??" In panel 2, a northern cardinal is telling a story to some songbirds. It says "They peered through the windows of the house at the gory scene. Zombies had smashed through the door in the night. The homeowner was dead. But worst of all... He hadn't refilled the feeders." An eastern bluebird says "Aaah!" and an American goldfinch says "It can't be!". In panel 3, A screech owl is telling a story to other owls. It says "And then the ghost fluffed itself up really big to appear scarier." A saw-whet owl gasps, and a long-eared owl says "Horrifying!". In panel 4, a downy woodpecker is telling a story to other woodpeckers, and says "The eerie sound rang through the dark woods. Tap-tap. Tap-tap. It was the distinctive two-part knock of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. The species had returned from the dead... FOR REVENGE." A red-cockaded woodpecker says "Yesss".

This is useless data, then
He doesn’t think it should be used for rankings of programs at different schools for multiple reasons, including a number of data limitations. For example, the data set excludes earnings data from workers in several settings, including employees of certain nonprofits, independent contractors, federal employees and more.

The data set is also limited to workers who remained in Virginia, and does not include those who moved out of state for jobs post-graduation.

Missing my dad today. I used to call him when I was in the thick of composing/teaching stress (like rn). He’d tell me about his work for NOAA on climate change &/or, when he was retired, about the kid down his street with whom he had a giant-pumpkin-growing rivalry. It always calmed me. TY, Jim/Dad.
