This is exactly the same for translation. Much faster, much worse output that requires much closer proofreading than a good quality human translation. And yet!

A title card from the 1980 Estonian animated film Suur Tõll, featuring artwork in the distinctive expressionist style of Jüri Arrak. A stylized figure with a spiky yellow face, dark almond eyes, and broad orange shoulders holds up a sheet of beige parchment with both hands. The bold black Estonian text on the parchment reads, "SUUR TÕLL / EESTI VÄGILASMUISTENDI AINETEL", which translates to English as "Suur Tõll / Based on Estonian heroic legend".

For the feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, here is a view from the remnants of the twelfth-century church atop Slottsfjellet (Castle Mount" in Tønsberg, southeastern Norway. It was part of a castle complex. Churches dedicated to Michael were often, but not always, located on summits.
View of the foundations of a small medieval stone church placed on top of a crag, seen from inside the choir. In the foreground, the crag rises in petrified billows, and in the middle distance are the low remnants of the wall, which outline the shape of the church. A narrow threshold marks the entrance from the nave to the choir, and further back is the threshold for the main entrance to the church itself, even narrower than that between nave and choir. In the far background, a blue stretch of sea lies between the crag and a low, forested ridge on the other wide, all lying beneath a blue cloud-streaked sky.

I’m annoyed with both LLM-writing and the increasing gotcha! use of LLM-detecting tools. It’s not this great victory you think you get to have over someone else. It’s all part of our common loss, and many things about writing are getting worse for most of us. Some points regarding Pangram here:

One real criticism I have of Pangram is that its UI lends itself to a false sense of precision. If your tool can't pinpoint exactly what role AI played in a piece of writing, it shouldn't output things like "23% AI-generated" in big bold letters.

My whole career the Humanities seem to have been curled up in a defensive crouch trying to justify our meaning/existence. At times it has even seemed a productive thought exercise, but I think generally whatever body has demanded the justification is not really open to being persuaded of anything.

Graffiti is not just a modern phenomenon. It is as old as writing itself, and always multifaceted: ancient graffiti makers were as likely to praise a king as to mock a colleague. ‘Graffiti Quest’, a new volume co-edited by our colleague Marina Sartori, sheds new light on ancient graffiti in Egypt.
