That’s a wrap on my post-lockout term at Dal. 10 weeks of classes, 9 tutorials, umpteen emails & office hour chats, 384 assignments graded. 😵‍💫 I may be classified as “part-time” on my pay stubs, but I’ve been working 7 days a week to keep this semester on track for my students. Ready for a rest. 🎁🎄😴

Solidarity to the @dalfaculty.bsky.social members locked out by Dal today. I couldn’t name a single VP from my time there, but I can sure sing the praises of the profs who fostered a conducive learning environment for my classmates and I in the midst of a global pandemic. They deserve a fair deal.

Emancipation Day. The post from the PM. People were enslaved in Canada, that's why we talk about Emancipation Day on August 1. Depersonalizing it by citing the British Empire is weak. I still laugh that folks don't understand why the 1834 Foundation is called the 1834 Foundation in Canada. 1/

Yesterday as my spouse and I walked through the grounds of the Manitoba Legislature to visit the statue of Louis Riel, a man on a bike did a double take when he saw our keffiyehs. “Take those f—king things off,” he shouted as he circled back to us. “F—king idiots! Go f—k yourselves! Shalom! Shalom!” It was such a strange sensation, hearing this word for peace hurled at us with such vehemence and hatred.

Twitter post/pohoto from JK Rowling who sits on what looks like yacht, taking a puff of what looks like a cigar. She holds a cocktail close to her face and looks smug as fuck. Text on tweet: I love it when a plan comes together. #SupremeCourt #WomensRights.Text on screen: our.moral.imperative British billionaire JK Rowling has posted several gloating tweets today after the UK
Supreme Court ruled that only 'biological women' legally count as women, excluding trans women from legal protections and safeguards.
Rowling's vicious smear campaign against trans people in Britain has been going on for several years now and has played a major role in cultivating the extremely hostile and toxic environment that exists in the country towards trans people, particularly in the name of liberal 'feminism'.

Canadian exceptionalism is just a different flavour of U.S. exceptionalism. Canadian history is as laced with injustice and human rights abuses as that in the U.S. - there is a reason Canadian mining companies are so hated globally. "We're better than the U.S." is not an identity, folks. Nor honest.

Just because your personal freedoms are being threatened for the first time, doesn’t mean that this is the first time personal freedoms have been threatened. Behaving in this manner undermines relationships with individuals & groups that have been living with this palpable fear for generations.

I remain deeply uncomfortable with the "stick a maple leaf on everything" approach to Canadian unity against American fascism. I understand the the flag-waving and anthem-singing serve a function with the general population, but they're also misleading. I want us to stay critical of our own state.
