Sol is not as smart as it "thinks" it is. Turning up the reasoning effort frequently seems to just give it worse tunnel vision. Example: wasted way too much time today trying to debug some apt/ubuntu BS in prod instead of seeing that I should just provision a new server anyway!

It seems very self-serving when AI labs call for enforced slowdowns. But Trump calling it a "hoax" does us a massive disservice (typical of his black-and-white framings)! We shouldn't lock in an oligopoly, but we can't handwave away the need to harden society against biological and cyber threats

I actually touched grass (and concrete) this afternoon! Buffalo's subway line isn't too useful for me (vs bus), but I had an excuse to try it since I needed to go to a station anyway to buy a MetGo card. Great views downtown ofc, but I ended up walking back up to Allentown for a coffee + work spot

"No AI in schools/education" seems like such a cop out to me. LLMs can let kids build apps to explore subject areas they are passionate about. We should be trying to safely facilitate that. It's so goofy that mainstream K-12 education STILL treats computing/coding as an arcane dark art.

Comments contextualizing human engineering decisions are as important to codebases as ever IMO. It's also fair to want AI-implemented code to use comments liberally for readability. Both kinds of comments are valid, yet you wouldn't want to confuse them. Comments by agents need an obvious label!

If we tax payroll, why not tax "tokens"? Maybe AI compute should be taxed (regardless of profit or lack thereof by the user or provider) because of its externalities. Of course, there are challenges to figure out like defining the taxable unit, and designing it to not be excessively regressive.

Obviously we still need to be able to criticize AI and slop. Criticism should focus on the capitalist systems that incentivized the slop instead of targeting marginal users. If an anti-AI argument starts criticizing the cognitive/attentional/social differences of others, it might just be ableist!

For those who don’t follow video games, there is constant policing of any AI use among small, indie developers. They are the most resource constrained firms in a field where profits are rare & artistic vision is often compromised, but they are punished more harshly than big devs by their audience.
