Even sound transit doesn't take this station seriously. Why do we?

I think that would be wonderful - I’m sure there are many neighbors like you! But what’s different now? We’ve known about this station for 10 years.

Kenneth Trease @kptrease.bsky.social · 9h
Why would the neighborhood (and their councilmember) have any interest in upzoning? They already have their train station. We’ve known the location of this station for a decade, including during ZIRP, and we built nothing, forced the neighborhood to accept nothing.

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

Old enough to remember Seattle urbanist discourse pushing pretty hard the idea of an infill station at 130th, and now that we have it, I am having trouble figuring out why.

Hey, @marketplace.org, the interesting thing in the Anthropic IPO prospectus leak isn't them pretending they pose existential risk to humanity, it’s that they spend about $3 for every dollar of revenue, with no path to profitability.

It is my impression that low income voters also have children and the need for someone to look after them while parents earn an income is even more acute.

Middle school band potluck got a little jazz septet going, but when it was the piano player’s turn for a solo, she was mid pizza slice, so she jammed for awhile with a slice hanging from her mouth.

The media you consume, the preferences you have, the algorithms you subject yourself to - that’s a bubble. Whereas the media I consume, the preferences I have, the algorithms I subject myself to - that’s just culture. I don’t make the rules.

If the media had just invented the story about the texas song, I don't think I'd be able to tell the difference. Had never heard it, had never heard *of* it until the story about it breaking some record this week. (I have now heard a snippet and it is indeed pretty catchy!)

Don't worry - I've found as I've gotten older stuff like this definitely doesn't happen more and more and things definitely heal up much more quickly.

We should have policies that move, say, 4% of homes that use heating oil, off heating oil, every year. Households that benefit can help contribute a bit more to fund the program, but it should mostly be government funded. If we'd started 25 years ago, it would be all done now. Let's start now.

I don't think I've seen it in seattle process meetings. There's a lot of "can't they live somewhere else?" but I don't think I've seen "we are doing this on purpose to help out with a greater cause".

Has there been a left-Nimby theory articulated yet that says that driving people out of blue states into red states is actually the plan? Like, "that's how we take the national government back over, by air-dropping liberals where their votes are most needed"?

I was shocked (though I shouldn't have been) to learn, upon listening to Tuesday's public safety committee meeting today, that SPD chief Sayles explicitly said former chief Barnes delayed the Bite of Seattle press conference to be briefed, given that every headline said it was Mayor Wilson.

Nobody — not teachers, not retirees, nobody — will be taxed under the Millionaires Tax unless they make more than a million dollars per year, and voters will always have the final say on any changes to that threshold. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to you.

She's super smart and super competent and very very good at communicating, and I do not think she deserves what will be unleashed if she runs. She'd almost certainly both regret it and be changed for the worse for it. It's not fair, but she should not sacrifice herself to make that point.
