Haven't shared anything in a bit, but I'm still here! I'm making quite a few life changes, and it's better for me to lay low from Bluesky and other sites. I'll still check here on occasion, but don't expect much for a while.

When you're a musician and only listen to game OSTs, or a furry artist and all you do is watch cartoons and play video games, or on the flipside you're a writer that only reads classics, your scope is going to be narrowed. You need a healthy mix of everything

A collection of uncolored dog doodles:

- A devious poodle doin’ a urination, looking all toothy.
- A sleeping spotted dog all curled up.
- A sad droopy doggy. It looks like it did something wrong.
- A happier dog, it’s springing up in the air, smiling.
-A fat potato-y looking lying on its bag all cute-like and dot-eyed.
- A longer furred dog, stretching forward, eyes closed.

something i really love about bill watterson: his (well-earned) mystique comes from his privacy, not from sharing a notion with many of his peers that art is a divine, magical process. when he DOES speak to the public he distills and clarifies the craft in such amazingly practical, articulate terms
WATTERSON: Right. What I have enjoyed about Calvin is that I feel I’ve got the range to do what I want, that he can be childish at some points and not at others. The whole challenge really is to set up rules. You can make your cartoon world have as much sense or as little sense as you want to, and the main thing is that you’re consistent within that vision. I think the audience will go along with you. It doesn’t have to be one or the other.WATTERSON: I think it’s the way I’m most comfortable writing. I like to work within certain confines. The aspect of the strip that I have the most fun playing with is the personalities and the characters. In other words, their interaction is what is interesting to me, not the playing with the form of the comic strip. I’ll qualify that. Visually, I like to play with the form, but, for example, Bloom County occasionally has a narrator. It’s a wonderful device, but it doesn’t really fit my needs. What I’m trying to do in Calvin and Hobbes is make it realistic enough so that I can explore the ideas that interest me without making it so realistic that it confines me.Most strips grow when new characters are added periodically, and I expect to do that once in a while, but I think they will always be minor characters. I don’t expect to add a major character into the center of the strip. The strip’s world is a very small, insulated one, which, I think, is more natural to me.

What I found to be true of the earlier strips I developed was that I was often making my cast much greater than I had the authority to speak about. I was trying to deal with friendships and relationships that I don’t understand. With Calvin and Hobbes, I don’t really think of them as a comedy team that dances on stage and does an act for you. It’s a very natural and personal friendship of the type that I’m most familiar and comfortable with myself.Watterson: I write separately from the inking up. I'm sure this varies from cartoonist to cartoonist; I find that the writing is the hard part and the drawing is the fun part. I like to separate the two so I can give my full attention to one or the other. Writing it, I'll sit down and stare into space for an hour and sometimes not come up with a single decent idea, or sometimes no idea at all, and it's very tempting to go do something else or just draw up a strip, but I find that if I make myself stick to it for another hour I can sometimes come up with several good ideas. And when I get to the drawing, I really enjoy taking a big chunk of time and working on the drawing and nothing else. That allows me to make sure that I'm really challenging the art, making each picture as interesting as I can...stick in a close-up or an odd perspective. This way, the writing doesn't distract me while I'm drawing and vice versa. I can devote my full attention to each.

everyone's said their piece about the jorge news so idk if there's anything i can contribute to it other than just keep drawing. u don't need to sellout to a studio or rely on a machine to get better, literally just keep drawing. the hard part is doing it everyday but it works. it just does

Don't like the idea that needing to onboard new masses of consumers onto an old existing ip is seen as good and necessary. Very different from passing down a story/idea generationally, but it's treated the same way, even though it isn't.
