For Maths fans, 2025 is a square. 45² = 45 x 45 = 2025 Also, 9² x 5² = 2025 40² + 20² + 5² = 2025 My favourite? 1³+2³+3³+4³+5³+6³+7³+8³+9³ = 2025 #Mathematics #teaching #education

Cassiopeia A, a dead star. Processed by @thocarp.bsky.social www.flickr.com/photos/19746... 🔭 🧪
A stunning, colorized image captured by the James Webb Space Telescope's MIRI instrument, showcasing the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. The image reveals intricate details of the expanding shockwave, with vibrant hues representing different elements and temperatures. Complex filaments of glowing material, including warm dust in shades of orange and red, and cooler gas in blue, are visible against a dark cosmic backdrop. The central cavity, a result of the original stellar explosion, is surrounded by a ring of bright pink filaments, indicating the presence of heavy elements. A green loop extends across the right side of the cavity, highlighting the dynamic and chaotic nature of this celestial event.

Pair instability is a cool process. Basically the star’s core gets so hot that the photons produced there have enough energy to spontaneously turn into matter. But the photon pressure is what’s holding the star up, so that causes it to start to collapse www.qub.ac.uk/News/Allnews... 🧪🔭

one of the best hubble images ever
The star cluster Pismis 24 lies within the much larger emission nebula called NGC 6357, located about 8,000 light-years from Earth. The cluster is seen here above a small portion of the nebula. The gas below the stars glows through ionization caused by intense ultraviolet radiation from the massive young stars within the cluster. The strong radiation and stellar winds from from these blazing, blue-white stars also pushes the nebular material outward, creating one of many low-density bubbles within NGC 6357.

Radioactive decay is difficult to envision unless you have a cloud chamber. Here I use a piece of naturally radioactive monazite crystal (~25 cm) to produce very energetic alpha particles - a decay product - that ionize alcohol-saturated vapor. I use this in Geochron and Natural Disasters classes.

This is a Moonbow... A rainbow forms as a result of the refraction of sunlight as it passes through water droplets; refraction causes sunlight to be split into the spectrum. For a Moonbow, the only difference is the light source is no longer the Sun, but the Moon.

Ever wondered why walking around museums is weirdly tiring? At normal speed our legs act like pendulums, swinging forward from the hip & saving us a huge amount of energy. In "museum shuffle" our muscles must do ALL the work of constant readjustment. So cake in the cafe is scientifically justified 🥳

A spiral galaxy with a wide, oval-shaped disc. It has a shining spot at the centre from which two curving, pale red spiral arms emerge, wrapping once each around the galaxy. They’re surrounded by a whirl of bright threads and patches of dust, with spots of star formation scattered throughout. The glow of the disc fades smoothly into the background where some patches of dust can be seen, as well as foreground stars.Image of a galaxy on the black background of space. The galaxy is a very oblong, blue disk that extends from left to right at an angle (from about 10 o’clock to 5 o’clock). The galaxy has a small bright core at the center. There is an inner disk that is clearer, with speckles of stars scattered throughout. The outer disk of the galaxy is whiteish-blue, and clumpy, like clouds in the sky. There are different colored dots, distant galaxies, speckled among the black background of space surrounding the galaxy. Two spiral galaxies take the shape of a colorful beaded mask that sits above the nose. The galaxy at left, IC 2163, is smaller, taking up a little over a quarter of the view. The galaxy at right, NGC 2207, takes up half the view, with its spiral arms reaching the edges. IC 2163 has a bright orange core, with two prominent spiral arms that rotate counter clockwise and become straighter towards the ends, the left side extending almost to the edge. Its arms are a mix of pink, white, and blue, with an area that takes the shape of an eyelid appearing whitest. NGC 2207 has a very bright core. Overall, it appears to have larger, thicker spiral arms that spin counter clockwise. This galaxy also contains more and larger blue areas of star formation that poke out like holes from the pink spiral arms. In the middle, the galaxies’ arms appear to overlap. The edges show the black of space, including extremely distant galaxies that look like orange and red smudges, and a few foreground stars.A large spiral galaxy takes up the entirety of the image. The core is mostly bright white, but there are also swirling, detailed structures that resemble water circling a drain. There is small white and pale blue light that emanates from stars and dust at the core’s center, but it is tightly limited to the core. The rings feature colors of deep red and orange and highlight filaments of dust around cavernous black bubbles.

It’s interesting that the emojis show the earth from three angles 🌎 🌍 🌏 but not the fourth. Though 🔵 is a fair approximation of what it would look like. People underestimate the Pacific.
A picture of the earth showing the pacific ocean. You can see hawaii and New Zealand. Also the edge of antarctica, australia, and north and south america...but barely.
