Salvaged the gasket from the broken one and did my best to copy the old dimensions. Did a test boil and it shut off automatically! Might as well have a cup of tea to celebrate.

it would appear I bought the wrong kind of carbon felt, but I think I got the right stuff coming. Might pivot to a different project, like trying to make a new lid for the electric kettle I got my wife for our anniversary like 10 years ago that broke and no one makes a replacement for

Brief detour in the plan to finish the small oil lamp I started the other day that I wasn't happy with how it would sit in an existing lantern. Has four tablespoons of light (ha) olive oil in it and I am going to run a stopwatch to get an idea of how long it will burn for.

It's that time of the week, where I saunter down to my shop and work tinplate while I listen to WormGirl VoDs. I have coffee and I can hear the rain outside my garage door, gonna be a nice day to work. On the bench today: A carbon felt oil lamp and a lantern to transport it, going camping next week

from the same pieces, it's like a proto petticoat lamp. Looks like the fill hole either swings out or the small tab is just there to keep it in place? Either way I dig it. Whoever designed and made this had some very clever ideas, I appreciate the resourcefulness of old tinwork

I went to the Moyse's Hall Museum today and this is my favourite ridiculous helmet ever.

An old (very good) boss I had once said machinists are required to have as much knowledge, dexterity, precision, patience, and practice as surgeons and should be paid accordingly. Our shop never made that kind of money because society, at large, doesn't think about how everything needs to be made.
