We gotta go back to no tech, but I cannot keep up with the paper grading anymore. Not sure what I’ll do about that.

We were no technology for the first 5-6ish weeks of school. The first assignment I gave them on laptops last week was very AI-esque. It’s hard to confirm, but after beautiful, original work, all the classic tells of high school work suddenly vanished

If you need a TX perspective, we have expanded our campus food pantry as demand has increased. Also partnered with community orgs to do free veggie distribution.

Have SNAP benefits cuts impacted you or your kids this school year? If you're an educator, have you been impacted--or are you doing things like keeping extra snacks in your classroom? I'd love to speak with you for a story I'm reporting: DMs open, rainesford.alexandra@gmail.com

When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

Did anyone else sob when they finished reading East of Eden? No? Just me?

They really don’t. I had the valedictorian last year and he got a full ride to Dartmouth they only accepted 2 of his 12+ ap exams and he didn’t even show up to all of his senior exams

The egos are wild to me. So many AP teachers I meet rely on their experience in AP classes in hs….as someone who was homeschooled i don’t get it and it’s ok to want something different

AP is 100% the only way to experience freedom in design as a lit teacher in Texas. I am all for the critiques though. I wish I had the time and space to cover this in my dissertation, but basically you can’t adapt to a flawed, exclusionary system. It has to be rebuilt

This is 100% political. We are underfunded. We don’t have enough staff. We don’t have effective people in leadership.

I’m in my 14th year teaching and this year I am teaching AP, running an advanced academics program, coaching three sports (2 head, 1 assistant coach), coordinating UIL grade checks for student athletes, and trying to enjoy my life.

And that is why they are dismantling the structures for DEI in the US, particularly in education systems. Because kids were learning ideas that made it harder to turn them into genocidal drones who would look on or actively participate.

I had a conversation with a DEI professional in another country last week, and y'all know I'm a critic of DEI as a framework, but she said something while discussing where the US is on the path to genocide: The goal of DEI work is to prevent genocidal ideas from taking root.

I am wholly captivated by East of Eden. I wanted to slow-read it, but I legitimately cannot stop turning pages… this is the first “kept me up all night” book I’ve read in quite a long time.

I’m overly irritated that every time I order an iced americano I have to clarify that I don’t want milk or flavor. It is a black drink by standard, so yes that’s how I want it. This is my pet peeve, ok?

I love this SMU-Florida State game with no technology. It shows who can work under adversity and who has really done the work to prepare for this game. Alignment and assignment mistakes will be glaring tonight.

These 4 books are a *must* to finish before September ends…I have 3 others that I want to get through, but they may get pushed to October

I just did a whole dissertation on bias in catalogues, and here’s the thing: the more you pretend a practice is completely neutral, not only is it more biased, but those biases are harder to spot. If you think machines don’t make this all worse, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

Anybody who’s still advocating putting these tools anywhere near a school is not doing so despite the cognitive collapse they cause, but because of it. dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn...
Abstract
Using 30 months of panel data on 26,811 Chinese students in grades 7-12, we study how generative Al affects homework productivity and learning. The data combine monthly closed-book exams, high-school and college entrance exams, and homework scores and completion time across nine subjects. We exploit staggered Al adoption in a difference-in-differences design. Al adoption raises homework scores by 18% and reduces completion time by 30%, but lowers monthly exam scores by 20% within six months.
High-stakes entrance-exam scores fall by 18 and 24%, with the full penalty emerging only after about two years. The losses are largest in social science subjects, followed by STEM and languages, and are especially large for junior students, high-achieving students, and boys. The learning losses are concentrated among roughly 80% of Al users whose behavior is consistent with homework outsourcing, as indicated by exceptionally short homework completion time coupled with high homework scores. Al users who maintain similar homework completion time as non-Al users experience small learning losses.

Additionally, many of the emails I got applauded the no AI-allowed. It goes for the students and for me. We can all spend 90 minutes of our day thinking for ourselves and collectively in our groups.

We’re low-tech this year, zero tolerance on AI usage. After 9 days of school we got on laptops once to write a professional email and immediately kids used AI. The only way to get students to do the work is to remove the computers. It would also help if the district didn’t have AI tools in every app

I’m in TX and it’s so unclear even for educators because the state list starts in 2030, but there’s already a variety of rules and reqs in each district and nothing is the same anywhere. We need journalists who are able to write the investigative pieces for sure.
