Recent conversations with my students about their summer jobs got me thinking about AI tools in the workplace. Do employees feel empowered to refuse them if those tools violate their values? www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/danc...

Generative AI and Moral Injury
Generative AI tools are supposed to supercharge employee productivity, but what are the limits to a company's demand that workers optimize themselves?

I cannot begin to count the amount of technology tools I have been told in the last 20 years that I need to teach my students how to use because they were the future. 95% of them are gone. A tool is a tool.

"History involves sorting and organizing hundreds of thousands of facts" I remain astounded by how loud and wrong people are about what history actually is.

I haven't heard people talking about this, but AI is an absolute game changer for doing historical research. History involves sorting and organizing hundreds of thousands of facts— a massive logistical/memory problem made so delightfully easy with agentic research. 1/

I did an OCR conversion of all my PDFs to make text files, built a semantic search index, and can just let my agents roam free to answer questions, fact-check, dig up interesting stories, quotes, etc. It takes a lot of the hard work out, as well as a lot of the human error. 2/2

I spent years on my university's IRB. 98% of researchers are basically ethical, and the IRB process is a frustrating layer of bureaucracy. 2% of researchers are war criminals, and what they're prosing to do is *shocking*. The bureaucracy exists because there's no way to tell in advance who's who.

Hey #philsky I'm helping to organize the Guide for New Chairs workshop for the APA this year. I'm looking for people who have served or are serving as department chair to be panelists. Not a heavy lift, just a zoom session in early-ish August. Volunteer or rat out your friends!

Colleges will under-hire, expend zero time or resources to expand a major, and sink money into expensive boondoggle programs that send students into other pathways and then turn around and say the market has spoken so they’re shutting down a major.

I think the notion of "limited cognitive resources" has been expanded too far and to our detriment. "Cognitive resources" includes a lot of things. Not all of them are not like a water reservoir where the boundaries are fixed. We can enlarge them. We appeal to limitation to justify being lazy.

Even experts disagree about the impacts AI will have on our lives. The debate has less to do with how the technology works and more to do with how we feel about it.

The only correct take on a fundamentally anti-human technology.
Screenshot of David Simon interview
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.
