@birdandbeach.bsky.social Thank you so much for the lovely Frank the Rūrū tea towel I was given for my birthday today, and extra-special thanks for the card + coaster. Such a delight :-) I've long loved the portrait version (pictured on my bedroom ceiling some years' back) & will love these too :-)

I didn't read the article, but I found your comment interesting. As someone who's lived with chronic illness for ages, I often think about how so many people think the world is divided into 'people who give help' and 'people who receive help'. In the disability community, mutual aid is...

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

How much income would it take from the richest 10% of people in the world to match that of the poorest 10%? Our colleague Pablo Arriagada calculated the answer using data from the World Bank's Poverty and Inequality Platform.

I've been practising 'visible' darning mends on things people won't really see, like my bedsocks. Yesterday I decided I was ready to darn something more prominent, and tackled two holes on a wool top. I'm pleased with how tidy they came out and am looking forward to wearing it. #VisibleMending

Artist’s painting of a hippo on a flake of limestone 🦛❤️ Perhaps a practice sketch, or simply for the joy of painting 3,500 years ago! From Deir el-Bahri, ancient Thebes, c. 1479–1425 BC 📷 The Met #Archaeology #Art
Met Museum image of an ancient Egyptian artist’s small, naturalistic painting of a standing hippopotamus on an uneven shaped flake of white limestone, dated c. 1479–1425. The hippo is painted in profile with head lowered and to the right. The body is outlined with black paint and painted brown. The belly, eyes, and ears are painted red. Although the ancient Egyptians were well aware of the danger and destructive power of hippos, this painted hippo looks rather harmless. Dimensions: Height 10.8 cm, Width 12 cm

Egyptian artists made practice sketches on flakes of limestone, sometimes for use as templates when transferring an image to a tomb or temple wall. Limestone flakes were readily available because of the constant construction of temples and rock-cut tombs. Better still they cost nothing, unlike papyrus. A number of sketches on linestone were found at Deir el-Bahri during the 1922-23 MMA excavations. This painting was acquired by the museum in the division of finds.

I was stunned by the height of the flower spike on this aloe(?) on my walk today - in Avondale, Tāmaki Makaurau.
A harakeke-sized pale green succulent with a flower spike that's easily 5+ times as tall as it. There's another one in the background.View down a footpath with a red fence on the left, berm on the right. In the distance is the flower spike, poking higher than the power lines.

I've been having fun mending holes on my comfy bedsocks, and learning about pattern darning in the process. The green and yellow mend was the first (practising going through the underlying fabric as this was a more weak spot than an actual hole). #VisibleMending
