NEW: In March the White House released an FY27 budget request that zeroed out the National Science Foundation's directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). For months it was unclear what would happen. Now, with FY26 over, the damage to SBE is coming to light. My reporting:

~Approximately no one in the general public knows because the leaders of the R1 research universities - whose budgets, programs, & personnel are entirely or significantly dependent on federal funding - have been totally absent from the public square in explaining & collectively protesting this.

I haven't seen any news coverage yet of Cameron Hamilton's announcement that he has re-defined the entire field of emergency management to include only preparedness and response activities related to coordinating police, fire, and EMS. Seems like something that should get some attention.

CRS is another affliction that used to be far more common and is now extremely rare in this country because most people who get pregnant had the MMR vaccine as children. While not as immediately frightening as the measles outbreaks, I fear that changing as the cohort of unvaxed kids today get older.

my mom was born with significant hearing loss because my grandmother got rubella during her pregnancy—luckily, she was spared the more severe forms of congenital rubella syndrome. by the time she was a young adult there was a vaccine, and she didn't have to fear the same thing happening to her kids.
