Incredible. First Secretary Mullin claimed that DHS had identified 15,903 noncitizens on Nevada’s voter roll. Then DHS officials told a skeptical Nevada, no no no, that’s just people we flagged. Here are the names of 185 people we KNOW aren’t citizens. All 185 were citizens. DHS got 100% wrong.
When the Department of Homeland Security sent Nevada a list of 185 names last month that it claimed identified noncitizens who had been improperly allowed to register to vote, state election officials got to work.
On Tuesday, the state sent a strongly worded rebuke to the federal government: Every single person on the list was a lawful citizen.
"As for the 185 individuals, our records indicate that they were citizens," Greg D. Ott, a deputy attorney general in Nevada, wrote, according to a copy of a letter sent to Department of Homeland Security officials obtained through open records requests.
"You have provided nothing of substance to suggest otherwise."Following the meeting, Ms. Vogt sent a clarifying email to Nevada officials. "I also wanted to be sure I clarified that we did not reduce the 15,903 to 185," she wrote. "We've manually reviewed some of the 15,903 and confirmed 185 are not U.S. Citizens."
Now, Nevada officials are saying even that 185 number is wrong. They also took issue with a letter D.H.S. sent them in early September, in which the agency reiterated its initial claims about nearly 16,000 noncitizens on the rolls and pressured state officials to review each case in a letter to Nevada officials in early September.

AITA for correcting my girlfriend's family every time they mispronounce my turtle's name?
I have a turtle named Geoff. Yes I know Geoff is normally pronounced Jeff. His isnt. My girlfriend's family knows this and still calls him Jeff basically every time his name comes up.
His name starts with /dz/ instead of the normal American English J sound /d3/. So regular Geoff/Jeff is roughly /dzef/ and his is /dzef/. They are similar but they are NOT the same consonant. /d3/ is a voiced postalveolar affricate and /dz/ is a voiced retroflex affricate. Basically you make the beginning of "Jeff" with the tongue farther back/retracted, which gives it a harder, deeper "dzh" sound.
I'm really into etymology and historical linguistics so the spelling was intentional too. Geoff is already a weird spelling from a modern English perspective because gives you basically no reason to predict /dzef/ unless you already know the name. Obviously I am NOT claiming medieval Geoffrey was pronounced / dzef/. I

Lot of issues here but one part that sticks out in light of the almost-attacked-a-Chinese-ship story today: people with very important jobs where lives are at stake have bought the hype and outsourced their whole brains to AI. We're going to see more and more of this. www.cnn.com/2026/09/18/p...
In the past year, the Defense Department has rapidly made Maven a cornerstone of the US military apparatus. Several former senior US military officials now work for Palantir, including some with high-level security clearances in Centcom’s Tampa headquarters. Their role is to keep the software functioning inside secure military environments. Some Centcom personnel expected Maven to flag stale information or inconsistencies in the underlying intelligence assembled for potential targets, the officials said. It’s not clear why they had such expectations.
The intelligence report, circulated across the US military this spring in the midst of the war with Iran, immediately set off alarm bells: A Chinese ship in the Middle East was transporting components of a nuclear weapons program.

The US military swung into action with plans to intercept the vessel, according to four sources familiar with the episode. According to two of the sources, armed members of the US military were preparing to board the ship. Military planes were in the air, one of those sources and another source familiar with the incident said.

It was only just before the planned operation that officials dug deeper into the report put together by a special operations command analyst and found it had been generated with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) — and that a chatbot the analyst had used inaccurately identified the material the ship was carrying. CNN was not able to learn what the misidentified cargo was.

Charles Lindbergh was lucky he survived as an airmail pilot. Of 200 pilots hired between 1918 and 1926, 34 died. A display at the Smithsonian Post Office Museum gives their ominous nickname: The Suicide Club. The commercial viability of mail laid the groundwork for a business transporting people.
“Suicide Club” display at the Smithsonian Post Office Museum in DC. It reads:

Pilots hired by the Post Office Department began flying the mail on August 12, 1918. These men were a fascinating mix of native-born Americans, immigrants, former military pilots, and civilian instructors.

Airmail pilots were expected to fly in the face of challenges that others could refuse, in order to maintain the schedule, even in bad weather. With such odds against them, it is remarkable that more pilots did not die in the service. Of over 200 pilots hired between 1918 and 1926, 34 died flying the mail. The service gained an ominous nickname among aviators as a "suicide club" for flyers.
The early years of airmail service were the most dangerous. In 1919, one airmail pilot died for every 115,325 miles flown.

By 1926, improved aircraft, navigational and flying aids brought the number of airmail pilot deaths down to one pilot death for every 2,583,056 miles flown.Building an Industry display at the Smithsonian Post Office Museum in DC. It reads:

The Air Mail Act, passed on February 2, 1925, recognized the leadership role of the postal service in aviation.

The act was intended to encourage commercial aviation and to authorize the postmaster general to contract for the mail service." This legislation, combined with the Air Commerce Act of 1926, allowed the Post Office Department to lay the groundwork for the growth of the U.S. commercial aviation industry.

If the first airlines had relied on paying passengers for income, none could have survived.

Some commercial airmail carriers made as much as 95 percent of their revenues from carrying mail on contract airmail routes, known as CAMs. The first five CAM routes were contracted in 1925 to Colonial Air Transport, Inc. (Boston to New
York); Robertson Aireraft Corp. (Chicago to St. Louis); National Air Transport, Inc. (Chicago to Dallas; Western Air Express, Ine. (Salt Lake City to Los Angeles); and Walter T. Varney (Elko, Nevada, to Pasco, Washington).Early Plane on display at the Smithsonian Post Office MuseumEarly air beacon on display at the Smithsonian Post Office Museum in DC.
