So highly progressive income or growth taxes are easier to maintain than wealth taxes. I'm not learned enough to know whether that really forms the basis for effective policy, but it makes more sense than other tax schemes I've read about.

I'm not smart enough to know, but Alessio Terzi explained it somewhat differently in Growth For Good. in his framing, people's loss aversion makes higher wealth taxes hard to swallow. people think of income or growth differently, and that taxes there as a cut of something not yet theirs.

#WeekWithoutDriving starts tomorrow! From Oct. 1–8, try walking, biking, rolling, or taking transit for a trip, a day, or the whole week. Give it a try and pay attention to what makes getting around easy and what gets in the way. Info: weekwithoutdriving.org

the detailed liveblogs of municipal meetings covered by Publicola and The Urbanist reporters have lots of information that doesn't make it into their full reports. you can pick up a lot of nuance from them.

I'm really mad no one ever made a sequel to the greatest movie ever RoboCop, but I've used this to refine my strategies for coping with disappointment over how my favorites are treated.

Chuck Tingle wrote some literary sex crimes. I haven't read every T. Kingfisher book, but the ones I have read are far from that category.

for instance, a lot of romance readers dislike passive mc's. i agree. so bad reviews help me avoid that. but people don't say "I hate intelligent active mc's and both of the mc's were that".

you're right that people are better at describing what they don't like than what they do. if there were enough things that people don't like that i do, I might read blog/social media reviews more. but it turns out I'm basic enough that it's not helpful.

I read the Booklist reviews most months and pick out anything that looks interesting. Also the short reviews that accompany Reactor's anticipated books. I don't read lengthy reviews, and I stopped reading blog reviews.

People covered head to toe in latex are looking for an apartment on my street, but aren't sure which one it is. They keep looking at names besides the buzzers at various spots. Then looking at their phones. They have a six pack of Modelo. Folsom Street Fair nearby, for reference.

I think the “there’s a train stop there” is so ignorant. If you think it’s just a scheduling issue you have done no work at all. It’s far beyond just “scheduling”

You know what doesn't have enough painted wizards? Light rail. BART, Muni, Link etc. would be so much better with some good wizard murals.
