The downtown Neiman Marcus flagship was one of the first major Dallas businesses that broke with these practices. In 1961, the company desegregated its Zodiac Room, a swanky lunch spot frequented by Dallas elites. Later, they welcomed Black shoppers to come and buy clothes without restrictions.

We lived in an apartment across the street from the NM flagship back in the late 00s, and even though we (obvs) didn’t shop there, it was always a weird joy because of the window displays. Especially during the holidays. RIP 😢

It was such a treat to find these gorgeous little green cup mushrooms in the forest this morning. Usually all I can ever find is the bright turquoise mycelia in the rotting wood. Finding the thumbnail size fruiting bodies is pretty rare for me. Their colour is unreal. 🍄🌿

This visual presentation of wealth to average Londoners using poker chips is really interesting - might be cool to see what non-wealthy Americans have to say about seeing something similar. So many people don’t understand what a billion dollars looks like.

I had not seen this clip where Tammy Duckworth advises Democrats to "not impeach anybody," "get back to work" and "allow" Donald Trump to "save face" and I would just like to remind the senator from IL that the federal government took 4,000 Chicagoans and murdered a 38-year-old father last fall.

It’s hard (for me) to get the perfect shot of something beautiful, but this one of the twilight from my windows is maybe pretty close.
iPhone shot of the northwestern skyline at sunset from my living room window. A deep and rich indigo sky blends from the east to the west, melding into the gold colors of the setting sun.

It looks more insanely beautiful in person, naturally.

You have to make making culture a priority. mattdpearce.substack.com/p/how-should...
What do we lose when software is our greatest cultural export? Doesn't it bother you that Al has made the signs in your neighborhood uglier and removed the quirks of human idiosyncrasy in the handwritten note stuck in the storefront window? Wasn't it better that people could choose whether to see the silly Wile E. Coyote movie instead of leaving a finished project in the vault to die in tax write-off purgatory?
Weren't you amazed to learn that the Circe scene in Christopher Nolan's "Odyssey" was shot completely in-camera, with prosthetics and no CGI? Aren't there different, more difficult stories out there that also deserve to get told, and to also get told well?
Don't people work hard enough and suffer too much not to deserve, in their short lives, to encounter beautiful and well made things?

From 1976, but the entire article could be written today. “The economic consequences of equality for women is enormous“
And while we are both engaged in making these elementary proofs, what else is going on? Who benefits from our mutual self-absorption? Is it the corporate center. The beneficiaries of this old-fashioned diversion are the major business interests, splayed within both political parties, which have concluded that equality for women, coming on top of the decreasing flexibility in the hiring and firing of black people that has followed the civil rights movement, would introduce an inelasticity into the labor force that their profit margins cannot bear.
