Do not carry a cold beverage in their presence. Politely decline any drinks or sweetmeats they may offer. Keep a plain iron nail in your left trouser pocket and a sachet or paper twist of coarse salt in your right shoe. Enter and leave your chair moving clockwise. Follow up with a thank-you note.

Such great advice! It is also useful for editors trying to learn more about your work. If I see an interesting panel in a conference program, for example, I’ll look someone up. What I find online can confirm if that scholar’s work lines up with my acquisitions work and inform whether I reach out.

Sneering about the "faculty lounge" is deeply funny. Most departments don't have one, but if they do, it's like a wall of mailboxes, a coffee maker and maybe a mini-fridge. You're basically sneering about the break room on The Office. "Oooh, look who has a *vending* machine! Excuse me, m'lord!"

Averbach not only sheds light on nineteenth-century Russian literature and its reception but also makes an important intervention into LGBTQ studies.”—Alexander Burry. “Innovatively building on the existing tradition, this study settles the debate about Aleksandrov’s gender identity for the next generation of readers.
