Volume 3 of our space Q&A podcast is coming! We'll be grilling @thespaceabove.us on DBZ episodes 39+40 (space orphans + Vegeta returns to Freeza Planet No. 79), but as usual we'll take all your DB + space questions! Here's what we talked about the last two times. Get your new questions in by Monday!

Podcast 515 - Space V1

What kind of propulsion could a sphere-shaped spaceship have & how realistic is that?
What kind of aerodynamic considerations are there traveling in space?
When the pods crash land, even with cushioning, how do they not get obliterated inside?
Shapes of ships in the series: Namekian ship vs. Freeza’s ship (do they make sense?)
Relative positions, coordinates, and reference frames in space
How the Capsule Corporation ship probably works vs. some of the other ships
Can you push someone into the sun? Would they burn up or go into orbit?
What would happen if we actually blew up the moon? And then we brought it back?
What would be the effect of 10x gravity on a normal human?
Breathing in space? Maybe just the stratosphere? And they’re talking to each other?
Real-time communication across space
Time dilation – shouldn’t hundreds of years have passed?
What kind of strain would it put on someone to escape velocity?
The ramifications of the air moving when someone suddenly teleports
Characters moving faster than the speed of light – what why how what
Suspended animation in space – no, they have to work out in real life!
Who would win in a fight: John Blaha or Mr. Satan?
Freeza space stations do actually exist out there
Turning gravity up and down inside a space ship (vs. setting this up on Earth)
How common are planets in space?
Just how far away from each other ARE those planets?
When the Saiyan ships land, do scientists just go hogwild over them?
What are Bruits Waves?
Material science behind Freeza army armor
Humans and brief exposure to a vacuum
Are there other astronauts in the Dragon World?
Venus and just how hot it is

Podcast 533 - Space V2

Takes Gohan and the others about a month to get to Namek, but Goku only a week
DBZ episode 50 - Goku fixing problems on the space ship
Something hits a panel and it breaks / tears a hole – how do you fix that?
Special glue and adhesive, particularly on something metallic vs. aluminum
Distance between planets (again)… and now galaxies, and a frame of reference for that
Toriyama’s illustration of the cosmos in Dragon Ball Landmark
Dr. Brief’s space maps and computer applications
The naming of stars
The colors and design of space suits throughout the series and movies
Goku and a Kamehameha in space
Bulma being a complete slob inside the space ship
Is it always sunny up high?
Gravity rooms and all the considerations that go into that
The GT space ship, its viewing dome, and other design considerations
Launching out of an underground bunker vs. above ground
What would actually happen to a planet if someone blew up its core?
Troposphere vs. Stratosphere vs. Mesosphere vs. Ionosphere (and breathing)
Freeza surviving in space – what the heck does that mean?
Daima and the layers of the Demon Realm
Gotenks flying around the planet super fast
Nyoibo, length, mass, and going to the moon
Energy needed to destroy a galaxy
Transmitting sound
Time dilation (again) and real-time communication across time and space (again)
Three suns of Planet Namek and if humans could survive there
Can you be reflective in space?
Sneaky shuttle and satellite launches

Assuming Pilaf, Tambourine and Arale will eventually return, all I need now is just a feeeew more characters from the pre-Z era (kid Kuririn and Murasaki please) and this will be my dream Dragon Ball game, if not my dream video game period. (3/3)

I really enjoy having this almost fully fleshed out cast of characters from the ENTIRE series to play with. It's a Dragon Ball sandbox, limited only by your imagination. And my autistic hyperfixation goes HAAARRRD here, it tickles my brain in all the right ways. (2/3)

"NEO" was so enticing that I bought the Steam version of Sparking Zero even though I've been playing it on Switch 2 all this time. But this DLC is not gonna come out for that version until 2027 (I expect it will take a FULL year before it's out) so I just had to take the plunge. (1/3)

It is getting harder to see it these days, but I always hold on to this quote from Samwise in LOTR: "There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for."

An image of Samwise Gamgee - the real OG - from the LOTR movies.

"I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.
Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't.
They kept going. Because they were holding on to something."
~Samwise Gamgee

I think a lot about how we as a culture have turned "forever" into the only acceptable definition of success.

Like... if you open a coffee shop and run it for a while and it makes you happy but then stuff gets too expensive and stressful and you want to do something else so you close it, it's a "failed" business. If you write a book or two, then decide that you don't actually want to keep doing that, you're a "failed" writer. If you marry someone, and that marriage is good for a while, and then stops working and you get divorced, it's a "failed" marriage.

The only acceptable "win condition" is "you keep doing that thing forever". A friendship that lasts for a few years but then its time is done and you move on is considered less valuable or not a "real" friendship. A hobby that you do for a while and then are done with is a "phase" - or, alternatively, a "pity" that you don't do that thing any more. A fandom is "dying" because people have had a lot of fun with it but are now moving on to other things.

I just think that something can be good, and also end, and that thing was still good. And it's okay to be sad that it ended, too. But the idea that anything that ends is automatically less than this hypothetical eternal state of success... I don't think that's doing us any good at all.

There's a reason why every fascist movement tries to destroy artists (this time it's via the enshittification via AI slop). Art and creation are the opposite of hate and destruction. Art reminds us of our joy, our individuality, our history. Art always has value, but especially now.

He wanted to make a dinosaur playing basket-ball, I drew this for him. They loved it so much, the dad paid me in the end

A traditional illustration of an anthropomorphic dinosaur playing basket-ball. He looks at the viewer while playing.

The result of an illustration I did for a kid while explaining why this is better than the AI art they tried to do on their tablet.
