Very good that the IFS did this but it doesn't make the slam dunk case for SureStart that many seem to think. A lot of the benefits are uncertain and I suspect the overall return is much lower than you'd get from e.g. just scrapping the two child limit.

Depending on where you are in the country, if you are an FSM pupil, you could be 6X less likely to become a top earner; 10X less likely to get a degree; or nearly 7X less likely to pass Eng/Maths GCSE than your FSM peers. These stats are so shocking! There's plenty more hard hitting stats below 👇

Our recent report included new data on access to medical schools, based on detailed original analysis of UKMED data by researchers at UCL. Only 5% of medical school entrants came from lower socio-economic backgrounds compared to 75% from higher.

Our research has shown that more pupils are coming into school hungry. To combat this, we've been calling for free school meals eligibility to be widened so it covers all families receiving universal credit. Great to see @resfoundation.bsky.social also arguing for eligibility to be expanded.

We also found that applicants from lower- and middle-income backgrounds were less likely to be offered a place at med school than their wealthier peers. Privately educated pupils were also more likely to be offered a place than state educated pupils.

Really interesting to look at how banding is used in different schools and the lessons we can learn from this. Banding within itself isn't a bad thing - how we choose to use it alongside how carefully we implement it makes all the difference!

There are far too many children starting primary school with major developmental concerns. That's an unacceptable policy failure that needs to be tackled - e.g. with universal access to pre school, and a reinvigoration of Sure Start.
