French TV news really is useless. Where was the detailed analysis tonight of, for example, police resources, that I bet you’d have seen in the UK for example? As it was we got a lengthy uncommented video of the riots that is going to go straight into the RN’s campaign ads.

I am so sad to hear of the death of Chris Wickham, an outstanding medievalist and (among many other things) a great economic historian. He was also an outstandingly good academic citizen, who in every respect left the rest of us in the shade, and a very nice man. May he rest in peace.

Part of the response has to be to punish fraudsters. And maybe part of the response will be that “if this paper COULD HAVE BEEN” generated by AI we will desk reject it. I don’t know what will happen, but spending time dealing with this stuff as an editor or referee will strike many as not worthwhile

Sanctioning judges and now the whole ICC is a mistake and irresponsible. Every use of a chokepoint invites others to find ways around it. Using a chokepoint in a way others see as illegitimate or capricious does so even more. They are undermining long run U.S. interests and power.

The Anglo-Irish trade war of the 1930s is perhaps an example of this. The Irish won it despite being much the weaker party, completely dependent on the UK market. De Valera was clever in how he managed the distributional consequences of the conflict and was able to appeal to Irish nationalism.
