Emmanuel Carrère, Kolkhoz.
In my baccalaureate exams, which I took in 1975, I got a 4 in philosophy. To put that into perspective, 10 is a passing mark, 14 to 16 is very good, and 4 is a straight fail. But you have to ask: philosophy isn't maths, so a 4 in it is absurd: why not a 5? Why not a 3? Why not a O, for that matter? Without telling me, my father approached the Paris School Board and after some time was able to view my exam paper. The marker had written: 'insufferable pedantry'.

I'm very please to announce a public release of my drag-and-drop bookmarking, game-making, and wandering tool Scrubjay! Scrubjay is a weird website builder that lets you cobble together web elements, images, links, text fragments, etc into a series of nested rooms...
"SCRUBJAY" sits over a bunch of images of frogs, birds, doors. it's a very 90s look

4 days in a hotel. 4 days regressing from _Homo toto_ to mere _sapiens_. it continues to blow my mind that the West turns from the face of God—the washlet—to instead genuflect before toilet paper. i am a fallen angel

Sharif: i am thinking of you today as i think of you all days. i still think The Game is stupid. but i also know that when they opened up your apartment they found a copy that book alongside a stack of all the holiday cards i'd sent you, meticulously ordered by year.

a tourist expedition company asked him to be a guide for them and he refused; couldn't stand the tourists…as an american in ibiza. incredible. a singular person, a reminder that we're all singular people.

he died in part because of a book, but also by way of a thousand thousand turnings, only a fraction his. he died because he'd come to adore his dawn hikes so fiercely that he'd track the moon's phase and the tides, planning routes deep into the countryside, an expat more local than some locals.

he burnt out on the US and moved to Spain and somehow managed to continue his ineffable dichotomy there, hiking the continent alone while cultivating an instagram account of thirst traps to stave off that loneliness.

Sharif was intensely generous. he was deeply musical. he kicked my ass at starcraft over and over again. he played slap bass and i thought that was the coolest thing in the world as a kid and honestly i still do. he biked across the country, one reinvention, and it was brave and enviable and real.

but the reason i am Posting instead of properly writing this up is because every time i've written something along these lines i've felt as if i'm letting the book win; i am characterizing him exclusively by way of the influence i most resented. and people are more than a single book read at age 17.

…and afterward was still all those things but with the honed edge of a grudge. at least so it seemed to me, from somewhat outside. and it was this edge that led him (again, so it seemed) to repeatedly attempt reinvention, first at college, then in california, and finally in spain.

this is why i have struggled to write about him. i could (and have, in drafts) make the argument that Neil Strauss effectively murdered my childhood friend. it's inarguable that before reading the book Sharif was a bubbly, goofy, perpetually friendzoned dude…

the boys in the group, myself included, all tore through it and briefly entertained its gross ideas of how to conceptualize women as a skeleton key for all life as we knew it…and then we all remembered we lived in a society and that way of thinking was poison, and we dropped it. except for Sharif.

it was the start of the mid-aughts pickup artist craze; perhaps you have the misfortune to remember that era.

by senior year things had started to attenuate. college loomed; we would be spread across the country. we were young and stupid and somehow all virgins and absolutely flooded with hormones. into this group was introduced—i'm still not sure by whom—the book The Game, by Neil Strauss.

the blog was read. teachers would reference it to us in class. it was all, in retrospect, quite strange, but at the time it felt divinely correct.

Sharif and i attended high school together. we became very close, he and i and a double handful of others, boys and girls. we named our friend group. we kept a group blog—this was before social networking—where anyone could read our thoughts about ourselves, high school, each other.

a thing i've learned about myself as a writer is that i need an entrypoint. if i can frame the door i can walk through and keep walking. if i can't square starting then i simply won't start. this thread on a stupid social networking site is me not starting. it is not what i want to write.

a year ago today my childhood friend Sharif slipped while hiking the cliffs of ibiza and drowned. i've tried a few times to write about this and have not been able to.

Alan Moore & Melinda Gebbie's "This is Information" from the 2002 9/11 Tribute Anthology comic is one of my favorite comics ever – its metaphorical approach to narrative had a profound influence on my comics making. I share bits of it in class frequently, but worth revisiting on this day...

A few hours before my kid’s playdate today I trundled outside with the vague sense I should spray for mosquitoes. Lugged hose out, connected pesticide. Stood with it in hand and listened. The yard thrummed with stridulation. Put it all back without spraying
