I’ve learned about what to say to coworkers or friends etc in those moments (though I’ve never had to, thankfully) but when it’s a stranger & you’re slightly trapped, I don’t know. But I want to actively fight against racism/Islamophobia, so any insight would be v appreciated

had a situation where I was stuck in traffic & my taxi driver thought that just because I was white I would agree with his Islamophobia. I truly had no idea what to say in that moment that would challenge him without pissing him off.

When even someone as confident and talented as CMAT is affected by the level of body-shaming vitriol aimed at her, what hope do the rest of us have. Body positivity is worthwhile, but it can only go so far when society still treats commenting on people's bodies as acceptable. We've so, so far to go.

i hang out with a lot of 4th graders and their favorite books are about greek mythology, historical tragedies, or violent politics as enacted by dragons and/or cats. the children do not long for verisimilitude! they long for extremity, danger, humor, and heroism!!

The forest opened one sleepy eye.
It had not had a visitor in a very long time.
The thicket let out an almighty yawn and the visitor, a boy, took the opportunity to step into the forest's mouth. It swallowed him whole. There was no going back, but he wasn't afraid.
He walked until he was lost. He was bleeding already; his blood left a trail on the moss behind him. The moss forgot his footprints but remembered his blood

All you do is take all the sex out, and use little short words, and little dumb ideas, and don't be too scary, and be sure there's a happy ending. Right? Nothing to it. Write down. Right on.

If you do all that, you might even write Jonathan Livingston Seagull and make twenty billion dollars and have every adult in America reading your book.

But you won't have every kid in America reading your book. They will look at it, and they will see straight through it, with their clear, cold, beady little eyes, and they will put it down, and they will go away. Kids will devour vast amounts of garbage (and it is good for them) but they are not like adults: they have not yet learned to eat plastic.
