There are jobs for college instructors. They do require degrees. But the pay and the benefits are abysmal. Another take on the state of the academy:

Adjuncting Until the End of Time
Universities now have more adjuncts than tenured and tenure-track professors combined. The conditions are unsustainable—for professors and students alike.

"I remembered how we drove / through Nebraska past midnight / once. It was a long, dark stretch / I was certain would be perfect / for star gazing" A poem by @kellyrsamuels.bsky.social in the Spring issue bit.ly/AmsterdamReview #poetry #poetrycommunity
There were not to be any stars
seen in the planetarium
after that summer.
The whole building was being razed
for a new structure with a name
in deference to the prairie.
The news led to mourning
in ways I could easily decipher
as tied to nostalgia: the school trip
a thousand years ago
when we sat stunned
into silence.

I had the opportunity to exchange book reviews with @kellyrsamuels.bsky.social Her chap The Sailing Place is a must read! Goodreads link: www.goodreads.com/book/show/25... Get your copy of Kelly's book here! bottlecap.press/products/_sa... #poetry #poetrycommunity #readingcommunity #indielit
The poems in Kelly R. Samuels’ “The Sailing Place” are pensive, impressionistic, sparse and compact, mirroring the frequently quiet malaise of necessary, domestic life. The voice is tightly measured and contained. The words seem to echo in these small spaces. But cracks in this guarded facade start to appear when routine is broken and the speaker considers the larger, natural world. An appetite for life returns: “The soaking up of.” The speaker’s world expands and brightens; colors reappear. There is a change in tone, however slight, that signals toward a life bubbling just below the surface, a moving past the mundane. I very much enjoyed reading Samuels’ collection and marveled at her masterful voice-control and restraint. These vignettes of a restless soul resonate in their quiet way, and her poetic craft is very apparent. I highly recommend it! Well done!

Adagio
We never said aloud: into the earth or fire.
And if earth, then where. And if fire, then where to cast the ashes.
Each thought the other would choose: choosing for two, not one— the body lying flat, the body left upright.
And if a stone.

The Innocent
For weeks we watched for hatchlings to come of three smug eggs tucked into a nest, the nest tucked into the crook of a neighbor's honeysuckle. Time nodded, was nodding— the shred of living, how offhand the wind teeters toward erosion. Hard at work, on guard in two backyards, the robins mothered and fathered their territory daily. And beyond, our block's alley stretched, aimless as fields, where watching happens by accident, by nature. They'd squawk on a streetlamp, a cedar fence, our back stoop, warning off the tabby, my two young sons, everyone stuck at home. I lost my mind with watching and thought it grief or egotism, the bruise of yesterday, not least the sky unraveling another season. It was easy to mistake the bared skeletal pinions as lawn clippings, old leaves. That circle in the grass, a massacre of feathers. That terrible cat. It was easy to lose my mind.
One neighbor said, Let's not tell the children, why know the world as always fated toward remnant. Another said, Go,
take the nest, set it under glass, and make it a lesson.
Instead, I watched our habits pass, the honeysuckle fade from sickly sweet to nothing but heat.
Call it science. It's summer again, and then everything's remnant. What did we do those days, stuck at home, my sons might someday ask. We lived or tolerated living. We looked away from death.

“If we can make, from tenderness, a revolution—“ —Carl Phillips in THEN THE WAR 💙
Fixed Shadow, Moving Water

One friend tells me everything's political, another says nothing is, we just make it political.
By "we"" he means human beings, I assume-what's political to a fox curled in sleep,
or a pond, or a sycamore in winter with no leaves left to stop the snow falling through it? I have loved you for less time than I have loved some others,
but none more deeply than you; no one more absolutely. Which, as if inevitably, amounts to a hierarchy of sorts, doesn't it? Value, then the power that comes with it-soon enough, the distribution of power, who gets to do the distributing...
But if we make of tenderness a countervailing force, the two of us-
If we can make, from tenderness, a revolution-
