OF HER WRITING RELATIONSHIP WITH SARA MOORE WAGNER:

"We attack images the same way ...both of us write heavily with moving through multiple images, and we both talk about food and taste in our poems... and for this book, that was important, because The Science of Things We Can Believe is a very hungry book."

Just wow, this book of poems by @christenkauffman.bsky.social
A SUCCESSION OF CHURCH MOTHERS
Golden Shovel of "Will the Circle be Unbroken?"
in the mirror is a magpie, judicious beak that will pick at the loose skin, holler about a temple the lord made in a garden somewhere, lilies that circle a valley before it floods and look, anything can be whole again, rearranged and unbroken if we want it enough, measure our faith by accepting miracles. I could be a miracle and wouldn't that be worth it, return to the altar, and by this I mean river swollen to the levee's red mark. lord, it's been months since I felt myself, stood by an elevator to watch it carry someone up and disappear them above me, footsteps so close by but untouchable. in the morning there's
a hollowness no Sunday could ever fill, but here is a woman who has my eyes, tells me it gets better once the rain ends. I've tried to find home in the center of a cut tree, pew after pew awaiting transformation but to confront the restlessness in me is to set loose the wild dog from its cage, forgive the tectonic shift when I should've seen only sky. my mother could be a god, could claim herself lord in an open field where we dissect the iris to see what's in-side. I want something to carry my dead weight, hold up the earth and plant me there. forget heaven. forget sky.Gorgeous colorful cover, young ladies in the grass. THE SCIENCE OF THINGS WECAN

Oh, this poem from @christenkauffman.bsky.social in THE SCIENCE OF THINGS WE CAN BELIEVE
ACTS OF PROTECTION
carry the bat as though she's a newborn found clinging to the sheers. feed her the fried fish you offered to your husband but he refused-a belly full of rum. ask her
to lie down on the bed under sheets you bought from the expensive boutique, Egyptian cotton,
the color of good sunburn. praise her brushed fur, glass eyes you've seen in a taxidermist's shop, this enjambment of meat and tiny bone flexed, poised for flight. refuse to cover her ornament of teeth when she opens into half-smile your father would scoop her up with his bare hands but this is not a poem about patriarchy. here, you can offer her mint tea, build her a shrine and ignite it.

A brief stab at alt text: A photo of Shaun Tan's wordless graphic novel The Arrival. On the cover, which resembles a 19th century photo album is an inset sepia illustration of a man in a hat & suit bent down to address a comical blobby white creature with an erect tail, stubby legs, & a wide mouth.

Midwinter new includes—WELCOME, Elizabeth Sylvia and Zöe Ryder White to River River Books! 🎉🎉🎉 Sylvia’s Scythe and White’s The Visible Field will be published in early 2026–read more about both manuscripts and poets in the image and alt text below. Congratulations!
Spring 2026

Scythe limns the verdant space of the cultivated garden (from Versailles to Massachusetts), the reality of rising environmental heat, and the cost of human flourishing. Alongside Marie Antoinette and the bees, the speaker engages French colonialism, the extractive sugarcane trade, and the language of flight and escape-who can fly, and who can escape.

Bio: Elizabeth Sylvia's first book, None But Witches: Poems on Shakespeare's Women (2022), won the 2021 3 Mile Harbor Press Book Award. She has been a semifinalist or finalist in competitions sponsored by the Burnside Review, C&R Press, DIAGRAM, Thirty West, Rare Swan and Wolfson Press, and is a reader for SWWIM Every Day. She has received fellowships from the West Chester University Poetry Center and the Longleaf Writers Conference. She is the winner of the 2023 riverSedge Poetry Prize. Her chapbook My Little Book of Domestic Anxieties is forthcoming from Ballerini Press.

The Visible Field
The poems in White's debut collection live in the space between the mind's internal life and the body's external world. Meditative and expansive, quiet and joyous, these poems listen and look past the surface of things. Pay attention, they urge, and we do.

Bio: Zoë Ryder White (she/her) has had poems appearing in Tupelo Quarterly, Iterant, Plume, and Threepenny Review, among others. Her most recent chapbook, Via Post, was a finalist for Tupelo Press' Snowbound Chapbook award and won the Sixth Finch chapbook contest in 2022. Her chapbook, HYPERSPACE, was the editors' choice pick for the Verse Tomaz Salamun Prize in 2020 and is available from Factory Hollow Press. She co-authored A Study in Spring, with Nicole Callihan. Another collaboration with Nicole, Elsewhere, won the Sixth Finch chapbook competition in 2019. A former elementary school teacher, she edits books for educators about the craft of teaching.
