A decade ago, Derek Lee was sentenced to life in prison without parole. In an appeal, he argued that it is cruel to automatically condemn someone to die in prison for a killing they didn’t commit. Pennsylvania’s supreme court last week ruled in his favor.

A staggering new finding from Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies: since 2001, the money left over each month for lower-income renters—after paying rent and utilities—has fallen 60 percent to a record low of $210. $210 left over for food, healthcare, childcare, and everything else.

I like the NYT, I subscribe to the NYT, but there’s no journalistic explanation for why they consistently clean up Trump quotes to make them coherent. It’s ok to edit for clarity if you’re quoting someone whose job isn’t public-facing. But this level of sanewashing is unethical.

I can't get over this number: in 2007, there were 360,000 newspaper jobs. Now, there are 80,000. "My local paper sucked!" Sure. What sucks even more? The void. "I get all my news from the Guardian!" No, the Guardian doesn't report on your town council, your school board, local cops.

Reporters need to point out that fraud in Minnesota social services was investigated under the Biden administration and widely reported by the media. Dozens of people had been arrested long before Trump took office. Lead prosecutor resigned after being asked to investigate Renee Good’s wife.
