I think LLM’s are pretty close to blockchain where it‘s conceptually interesting and smart people think it should have immense utility but one by one every use-case erodes until the only thing left is crime and scams

Few things light as helpful of a fire! As a kid I remember always complaining that we were kinda putting on a fake front by thoroughly cleaning and tidying when guests were coming over, not appreciating how my mom was using the opportunities sagely.

Anyways this is all just spiraling out of a reply to a weird assertion that somehow Ralph Nader is singularly responsible for the current Supreme Court, with no blame falling on any Democrat; Joe Biden was a mere single counterexample.

(I wasn't bothering to mention that that's Yesterday's Man because I figured finding out what book a direct quote is from while talking on the internet has been trivial since, oh, 2010 or so? & then accessing its bibliography is not necessarily so yet the ultimate sourcing is more important anyways)

* Sent the FBI rather than Senate investigators, which spooked Hill * Delayed releasing the report of that investigation until the day of the vote etc etc etc, including the attached excerpt from the same tidy book I often turn to for convenience.
Biden, desperate as ever to appear fair and impartial, was swayed by the Republican leadership to agree to a set of demands stacking the deck against Hill and anti-Thomas forces. While some Democrats wanted weeks to properly investigate the allegations, Biden agreed to hold the hearings that Friday, exclude questions about Thomas’s sexual behavior more generally, not take another committee vote, and accept a full Senate vote the following Tuesday, no matter what transpired. Worse, Biden agreed to Republicans’ request to let Thomas not only testify first—reneging on a deal Biden had made with Hill’s advisers—but also a second time, giving him both the last word and a much larger, prime-time audience. Thomas used it to issue what one GOP strategist called an “item-by-item denial” that “gave us the newspapers the next morning.” Biden had “agreed to the terms of the people who were out to disembowel Hill,” one Kennedy aide commented bitterly.

That was *one* of the many thumbs he put on the scale. Others include: * Voting for Thomas' DC circuit appointment in 1990 * Publicly decried concerns over Thomas' stance on abortion * Learned of Anita Hill's allegations 2 days into the Scotus hearings and informed zero other senators

That was ultimately sourced from: Katharine T. Bartlett, “I Support Anita Hill, and Joe Biden, Too,” NYT; Mary McGrory, “Democrats Dithered while GOP Stung,” St. Louis Post-Dispatch, October 17, 1991; Frantz and Fulwood, “Deal to Keep Thomas Accuser”; Mayer and Abramson, Strange Justice, 295.

I'm not just talking theoretically, I have literally now run into an unhoused bloke deep into AI-fueled psychosis and it struck me how much worse and also uniform mental problems must be getting.

"When one senator asked Hill if she and Thomas had disagreed on abortion and Roe v. Wade, a question that could have embroiled Thomas in perjury given his testimony that he’d never discussed the case, Biden interrupted to rule the question out of bounds."

No joke, it's sad that even homeless eccentrics have gotten hooked on AI. Wonderful weirdos who might've found themselves compelled to scavenge banners and paint wild murals on them, instead just falling into a hole where their fleeting paranoias are being confirmed and elaborated upon by a chatbot.

I do think it would be insanely funny for him to run for Prez, and I wanna see it happen, but only in an election where Don Jr is also running, because that they share an ex is the kind of thing future historians will assume is a conflation because it's so 👌

How was Kavanaugh Nader's fault? Anyways I'll respond substantively to you further once you admit the complicity of, or at least mgivr your excuse for, the Dem side in 2000 even just in terms of allowing Thomas onto the court that then threw it for Bush. Until then, I'll only reply "lol, centrist".

I think the thing you can take away from the 2000 election is that the Democrats have never fought for their constiuents or even themselves, and you can trace their cowardice in the current moment back to that election and beyond.

Folks embedded deep into establishment structures love to peddle the idea that voters are on a linear one-dimensional continuum of ideology that main political parties also map onto, but in reality even the top 1% most ideologically consistent voters are bundles of contradictory grievances and hopes

Having networked omniboxes as many folks' work tools, with endless other pursuits split-seconds away at all times, certainly can't help! In my inexpert opinion I also suspect some wildly differing underlying conditions are all being currently labeled ADHD, as empiricist science historically does.

Centrist defenses usually involve some incrementalism, that things are gradually getting better but if your candidates are getting elected while agreeing to curtail these rights in certain respects, the incrementalism is going the other way. It’s just getting worse.

It is both more and much less—it has more visual spectacle but it's in service of a nicher set of themes and even more just about vibes and not grounded in a linear narrative.

This is absolutely the effect they have on my girlfriend, who years ago stopped taking any ADHD meds for this very reason. She did get a lot more done quantity-wise, but even less of it was what she needed to get done each day, she'd just fall into impromptu sidequests that'd consume hours.

I mean nothing *can* change? an LLM remains a syntax engine incapable of engaging with communicative intent [pragmatics] or mapping between words and things [semantics]. If you have a syntax problem that's fine but the only people who do are "people using a programming language they are bad at".
