Just watched this and am still processing. Gorgeous except when it's brutal. Quiet, meditative, a living painting. Watches like The Northman, ends a lot like Robin and Marian. Doesn't go the easy route, either, I'm still chewing on it... but highly recommended. youtu.be/tlSDDuWxO_0?...

RIP to the utterly fascinating Marjoe Gortner, memorable in films like Star Crash, Bobbie Joe and the Outlaw, Food of the Gods, Earthquake and many more. The documentary on his crazy life is a pretty amazing watch too...

A ridiculous mash up of James Bond, Shogun and a haunted GI Joe cartoon, in which a man who looks like what your dad thinks he looks like sets off in pursuit of gold accompanied by his simian sidekick. Ninjas! Baboons! Pensioners being fed to piranhas! More ninjas! Movies are wonderful aren't they?

I did disc commentary for this film a few years back, a movie I had seen dozens of times over the decades but never really researched formally. The more I actually researched it, the more questions I had, and it remains a genuine head scratcher.

I champion this criminally under-seen adaptation whenever I can. Since being remastered in the 2010, where you can actually see a lot of what used to be an inky mess, this version is better than ever.

Captured in a quintessential movie still from Toei’s legendary Female Convict Scorpion (Jōshū Sasori) series (1972–1973), iconic actress Meiko Kaji embodies Matsushima Nami, the silent, vengeful anti-heroine known as "Sasori" (Scorpion).

Kaji’s sartorial silhouette—a wide-brimmed black slouch hat, a tailored black trench coat, and flowing dark hair—became an immediate counter-cultural icon. Turning over her shoulder with an unblinking, knife-sharp stare framed by heavy kohl eyeliner, Kaji elevated minimalist eye-acting to a fine art, maintaining an absolute refusal to speak for vast stretches of the narrative while projecting a fierce, smoldering rage against corrupt institutional authority.

The composition relies on a stark, subterranean geometry to heighten the character's profound isolation and lethal resolve. Framed within a cold, blue-tinted pedestrian underpass, the visual field is dominated by converging perspective lines of concrete pillars, white tiled walls, and receded fluorescent lighting stretching into a desolate, tunnel-like horizon. This industrial, monochrome setting mirrors the alienated urban modernism of post-economic-miracle Tokyo, serving as a sterile labyrinth through which Sasori glides like a phantom wraith. The cool, desaturated color palette contrasts sharply with her solid black figure, transforming her body into a graphic, shadow-like silhouette cutting through the institutional architecture.

Emerging during a turbulent era of political activism and shifting gender roles in 1970s Japan, Kaji’s portrayal of Sasori revolutionized the cinematic archetype of female vengeance. Rather than serving as a passive object within the era's "pinky violence" subgenre, Kaji reclaimed narrative agency through pure stillness and unyielding posture, forging a mythic symbol of anti-establishment defiance. Her indelible presence, bolstered by her own vocal performance on the film's haunting theme song "Urami Bushi" (Song of Grudge), left a lasting imprint on global pop culture and directly inspired modern cinematic homages such as Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill.
