@ianRobinson If you spend all you earn and have enough savings to cover emergencies, then this fair enough, the correct decision. But, and this will make me sound like a tosser, I do worry I have too much pension and I need to better balance work and fun.

What did you do yesterday, a day you took as annual leave? A day when you have no reason to think about economics. Well I downloaded the x01 spreadsheet on my phone at 7.10am because I was surprised at how low the headline unemployment rate was.

@groda.eu The big picture is fine. But at the margins it creates big incentives for our doctors (and others) to lump money into their pensions and retire much earlier than they otherwise would.

I'd always assumed my sister's homebirth in 1969 was a progressive sixties parenting decision by my parents. But apparently the maternity ward was full and they were told not to come in.

Last boost. Excellent piece. Government has put friction and difficulty into applying for benefits and the planning system to manage demand. If AI helps change that, then that's a win.

You may want to read Tom Loosemore's response. Tom was one of the key people in the early Government Digital Service. loosemore.com/2026/10/14/t.... Government, and others, have been rationing service by complex gateways, which AI leaps. Either raise the gateways or do something else.

@paulbivand.bsky.social Good piece. I don't think policy makers realise how much good will this sort of thing burns. “Making people answer lots of detailed question to constrain demand” has always been horribly iniquitous. It has also been a politically convenient lever to pull, which is why it […]

I see Sam Freedman's post about lots of people using AI to make complaints, and I'm a bit shrug shoulders about it. Because many people who should complain, don't, given the friction in the existing procedures. If an organisation is drowning in complaints, then perhaps ask why.

@samfr.bsky.social It's become easier to complain to the Ombudsman about shoddy treatment in financial services. Good. They need to get better at processing those complaints. And, god forbid, at hitting companies hard when they mess up so there are fewer complaints in future.

In other news, I'm down to two warning lights in the car after sorting the coolant. The first is the start/stop system which is a coin toss on whether it works or not. The second is a headlamp issue where there's water in the unit. Shouldn't have had that car wash.
