I'm listening to Melvin Bragg's The Soldier's Return that was on the radio earlier and it reminded me of the breakdown he talked about in his This Cultural Life with John Wilson. One of the greatest episodes. Very... real

The oracle that is IMDb tells me that Bryan Murray and Peter Bowles were paired again 5 years after the end of The Irish R.M. in a comedy drama called Perfect Scoundrels. Despite loving TIRM I have no memory of this, but I suppose by 22 I was high in my going-out years, not my tv-watching years.

For some reason whenever I see or hear of Natalie Harp I think of those young women suffering psychosis who write to convents wanting to be admitted.

When I read things like this it *always* makes me think we don't give enough weight to the huuuge political influence of leader's spouses. Everyone needs a trusted (whether worthy of that or not) sounding board/Higher Power.

Israel & Iran, reacting to films that make them look at themselves in the mirror: almost identical response: "Two-faced, hypocritical & despicable." "Treason against the state." "We will revoke citizenship of anyone who defames our military." Can you tell?? Autocrats shoot the messenger.

Every now and then I recall wandering around a gallery in Rye and getting into conversation with someone who said "have you seen the borough exhibition?". Was a bit confused: "no, is that an annual thing?". Then she looked confused... "No we have them at different times. This one's Burra". BURRA!!

New just now in The Atlantic: David Robinson resigned this week. He was among the longest-tenured employees at OpenAI—and oversaw safety reports on 12 frontier launches. He is very worried: “The time for trial and error is over.” You can read his essay here: www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Had to do a bit of a double-take looking at this picture in this week's Radio Times. It's Jamie Winstone but she looks for all the world like Caroline Flack.

Beautiful walk with an old school friend this morning who is in an airbnb for a month in the grounds of a grand old gothic Victorian house that HCC used to own (and I worked there for a while). These grand old government buildings that can't cope with modern cabling will soon be a thing of the past.
A girl in blue jeans and a white top stands looking at the camera in an old Victorian garden with trees around. In the distance a red brick gothic house surrounded by trees and a renovated Victorian garden in the foreground, with a very blue sky and clouds.

Surprised to hear on In Our Time that in Sheffield at least (but probably common throughout UK cities) cinemas (in 1940s) sat over 500, often up to 1000. Not what you'd think watching films set during WW2.

Here’s the most incredible story you’ll read today. A small plane with four people aboard crashes in a field. Another pilot witnesses it. That pilot happens to be flying a bunch of skydivers. They offer to jump to assist, are given permission. The skydivers happen to be EMTs. Everyone survives.

“It’s not ALL men.” None of the 50+ men the Cornell rapists invited to come join them in raping a woman they’d drugged went to the authorities or tried to stop it. Not all men would rape an unconscious woman, but where are the men who’d try to stop it, or EVEN FUCKING OBJECT?
