I appreciate how life changing this money is for him and his family and am glad they have this opportunity. And I think if he had just said “this was a negotiation tactic. And I had to negotiate as hard as possible to take care of my people, but my heart was always with Detroit” I’d respect it more.

Yeah, I think it just landed poorly with me because at the same press conference where he’s saying he’s being a man and taking accountability, he also pulls this total fourth grader move and says “well, you never heard me say that.”

I mean, isn’t it weird to say “these narratives didn’t come from me” when they almost certainly came from a person he employs to represent him? Blaming the media and saying they need stories when your agent is the one giving stories to the media seems 🙄

No STEM outrage when administrators close liberal arts departments for “budgetary reasons.” No STEM outrage when fascists are targeting our disciplines. But the second those things start touching their fields, then it’s a real crisis. These folks are consistent in their lack of solidarity.

Gonna be extremely petty for a moment: I am glad to stand in solidarity with my colleagues in mathematics against the tyranny of AI slop, but I have to ask: where the fuck were most of y’all when the humanities were first on the block to be sacrificed to the machine devils?

Feels the same as other threats to the academy before this. Threats come for the liberal arts first and STEM folks don’t care because by and large they don’t take our fields seriously. But then the same threats start impacting their fields and now it’s a crisis that requires solidarity.

Again, I am happy to stand with y’all, but I think we might take a moment to reflect on why the march of AI became so much more of an existential threat when it came for the practical fields, the science and technology fields.

The idea that "regenerative" grazing is a climate solution has really taken hold in some quarters. But the science is clear: It doesn't work. Methane and land-use emissions just overwhelm any soil carbon benefits. Here's a great piece by @nicholasdcarter.bsky.social drawdown.org/insights/eig...

ICE has fallen out of the headlines but July marked the largest number of migrant detentions ever on record. Five migrants have died in ICE custody in the last two months. It's also currently impossible to legally migrate to this country, as 100% of visa applications have been paused.

I'm sorry, what? In writing my first monograph, I spent six weeks trying to track down a citation in TWO languages I didn't know. And good thing too, because the citation was wrong. That's scholarship. That's research. You know, the thing we're trained to do?!?
The reactions of some researchers on Twitter finally being held responsible for not having read the very paper they submitted are... something. Mainly, they don't think they should have to check every citation or make sure the data is real and accurate. Because it's too hard, I guess.

Mickey's speech bubble: "Fool that you are, for you treat taxation as a burden rather than the means by which our burdens are eased. Behold a civilization rich in private wealth yet starved of public provision, where every man owns what his grandfathers could not imagine and yet trembles at the thought of how he will weather an illness or loss of livelihood. Will you fight for an affirmative vision of broad contribution and universal benefit? Or will you perish like a dog?"
