it's pretty bleak times right now but i'm hoping that whatever is on the other side of this, it looks a lot like rebuilding those trust structures in new contexts and within new ways of working. what will it look like-- who tf knows-- but i think deep working relationships are at the heart of it.

this is also (IMO) why a lot of the covid-era fresh startups fell by the wayside- you can have a studio pedigree 20 pages deep but if there's no trust, then it's hard to really make anything. and trust takes time and continuous shared wins (and shared failures) to build; there isn't a shortcut.

my belief is that at the end of the day, great games are made by groups of people who have high trust with each other & can fluidly execute a shared vision. which is a small part of why these layoffs are so devastating- it's not just about jobs, it's about these "trust structures" being torn apart.

you can't even play most of these games anymore. from a commercial standpoint, who cares! we're all on to the next thing! but deleting them feels like saying a deceased person's name for the last time for some reason. so here i am, slowly amassing this horde of dead things i can't bear to part with.
