DH friends. Anyone have ideas for publication venues for outcomes of smaller bits of exploratory work? We have some fun outcomes but probably don’t want to spend time working them into something big; but feel they are interesting to the community. I know I’m forgetting something obvious!

Fuck ChatGPT flyers. The future is broadsheets.
A crowded broadsheet with way too many fonts. It says:
Forget ChatGPT Flyers
Say it with
Broadsheets
Unlimited fonts
Stretch them
Or cram a really long sentence into one line for no good reason
No whitespace
Mix capital and lowercase
Pointing hands
(They're called manicules!)
Don't be left behind
Broadsheets are the future

Adventures in trying to get OpenWebUI to be a functional pedagogical tool. An ASCII word cloud! how resourceful. And yet completely incorrect.
Screenshot of OpenWebUI AI chat. Reads: "I've encountered a technical limitation in the current Pyodide environment. The matplotlib library appears to have corrupted the Python parser state after my initial import attempt, preventing further matplotlib usage in this session. Alternatives I can offer: 1. ASCII-style wordcloud -- I can create a text-based representation using character density." A code snippet reveals an ASCII representation of a wordcloud for Alice in Wonderland, with asterisks.

I passed by a pedestrian crosswalk today and a helpful mockingbird stopped me with a fire alarm sound and then cycled through three different crosswalk styles—two chirpy, one mechanical. When I didn’t cross, it returned to singing. Birds with jobs!

For admitted students day, I opened digital projects on multiple computers in our space—Listen to Wikipedia, BPL’s Atlas Scope, Catalog of Distinctive Type, some generated poetry, and Eliza. It felt cruel to tell the students to try to make her quit. It was open in Dev Tools. 😅

I know that bad news is coming when a co-worker messages me with "You're gonna be so mad..." Grammarly has rolled out an AI-powered "expert review" feature where its simulacrum of me makes suggestions for your text. My real edits are usually along the lines of "Throw this into the sea."
Your guide already highlights transparency and user trust; refining threat models, versioned documentation, user-centered examples, and layered information will make the advice more vivid and immediately actionable.

I accidentally ordered a half-dozen assorted donuts on the mobile app this morning. Pre-dawn on a holiday. Snug in bed. 6” of un-shoveled snow. Idk, other than that I was curious. Can you be choosy about your half-dozen assorted on the mobile app? No. And that button won’t take you there.

Resisting GenAI and Big Tech in Higher Education

Tuesday 25th November 2025

8am - 9:30am PST | 11am -12:30pm EST | 4pm - 5:30pm GMT | 5pm - 6:30pm CET

Virtual on Zoom – REGISTER HERE: http://bit.ly/4qE27dB

Generative AI is permeating higher education in many different ways—it is increasingly embedded in university work and life, even if we don’t want to use it. But people are also sounding the alarm: Gen AI is disrupting learning and undermining trust in the integrity of academic work, while big tech’s energy consumption, use of water, and rapid expansion of data centers are exacerbating ecological crises.

What can we do? How do we resist? Come learn about the environmental, social, economic, and political threats that AI poses and how we can individually and collectively resist and refuse. Learn about how some are challenging the narrative of inevitability.

Join this interactive discussion with international scholars and activists on resisting GenAI and big tech in higher education. Inputs from multiple scholar-activists include: Christoph Becker (University of Toronto, Canada), Mary Finley-Brook (University of Richmond, USA), Dan McQuillan (Goldsmiths, University of London, UK), Sinéad Sheehan (University of Galway, Ireland), Jennie Stephens (National University of Ireland Maynooth, Ireland), and Paul Lachapelle (Montana State University, USA).

This event will be recorded and is co-sponsored by:
