I am wary of comparing digital projects to books, but I realized today that the Douglass Day website is 90,600 words. Huh.

Yes the world is falling apart, but I had meetings in the past few days with collaborators who are finishing PhDs or just finished and...wow. Such stunning and courageous work in K-12 schools, churches, AI, community archives.

This is eugenics. The Alpha School (if we can even call it a school) is designed to quantify intelligence in ways that directly inherit from the history of eugenics. Their rhetoric around AI is just a smokescreen. Who needs Charles Murray when you got a chatbot?

OK wow, this is wild. My school announced that we are taking steps to ensure that students have "equity in access to AI." Meaning they all get Gemini licenses? Now that's some lumpy austerity. 🫠

Here's a funny one - I bought an old receipt printer on eBay and have been using it to print daily poems from the Early Black Press. Got a raspberry pi & button on the way. I'm gonna see if I can make a little poetry machine to take with me around town, events, etc.

Interesting to see the Times make the rare but big distinction between "open source" vs. "open weight" models. Open source stays in the discourse, but there's almost nobody left these days being open about their training data. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/28/b...
