Been gone for a bit thanks to reading for Woodpig Press, getting a new issue going for the FGTS magazine, and also trying to recover physically after metamorphosing into a slug over Christmas. I am (hopefully) back to posting silly pictures and dusty WIPs. Oh, also running the FGTS Bluesky!

I stand neither in the wilderness nor fairyland but in the fold of a green hill the tilt from one parish into another… —Kathleen Jamie, “The Wishing Tree” SELECTED POEMS (Picador, 2018) #BookWormSat #poem Hear “The Wishing Tree” on @thepoetryarchive.bsky.social poetryarchive.org/poem/wishing...
The Wishing Tree
by Kathleen Jamie

I stand neither in the wilderness
nor fairyland

but in the fold
of a green hill

the tilt from one parish
into another.

To look at me
through a smirr of rain

is to taste the iron
in your own blood

because I hoard
the common currency

of longing: each wish
each secret assignation.

My limbs lift, scabbed
with greenish coins

I draw into my slow wood
fleur-de-lys, the enthroned Brittania.

Behind me, the land
reaches towards the Atlantic.

And though I’m poisoned
choking on the small change

of human hope,
daily beaten into me

look: I am still alive –
in fact, in bud.

Happy Trans Day of Visibility! Here's a comic essay we made last year about Lunar Boy and QPOC representation 🌈📚 (1/4) #Art #Comics #OC #OCsky #Booksky #Artsky #TDOV
The cover of Lunar Boy. Indu sits on a pile of objects and looks out to the pink and blue sky. He's bordered by a giant moonPanel 1: Jes and Cin (identical twins with short hair) depicted cheering happily as they stand next to a cover of Lunar Boy. The essay reads: “Lunar Boy is going to be out in May and it feels unreal. I’ve said that a lot when working on this book. That it feels “unreal” to be bringing this story to existence. And I should explain why!”
Panel 2: Jes walks through a display of movie posters and bookstands while holding a book. The essay continues: “When I see representations of queer people of color in the mainstream, it always felt like something was missing.”
Panel 3: Cin being overcrowded by fantastical characters, a robot, a gorilla in a spacesuit, a cat princess, and a woman with a sword. The essay continues: “Especially in stories of happy queer escapism.”Panel 1: Continuing: “Their stories often revolve around their white queer friends,” A white woman points to herself as her other hand holds a Black woman’s hand. Who is off to the side. The white woman says “This story’s about ME.” While the Black woman says “I’m here too.”
Panel 2: Continuing: “They’re stripped of cultural specificity” a white woman shares a meal with a dark skinned hijabi woman. The white woman has a burger while the hijabi woman holds chopsticks, ready to eat her noodles. Dialogue above them reads “Ugh, why can’t the character just HAPPEN to be Muslim?” “So stereotypical.” An arrow points to the right showing an edited version where the white woman is unchanged and still eats a burger, but now the hijabi woman doesn’t wear her hijab and is also eating a burger. The dialogue above them reads “much better!” “Finally, a universally relatable diverse story!”
Panel 3: Continuing: “The intersection of their identities,” a venn diagram showing the intersections of religion, POC, queer, and diaspora.
Panel 4: Continuing: “or the histories of their communities, would never be acknowledged.” A woman solemnly stands in front of a grave bearing a bouquet of flowers. On the grave is a small candle and cup with the trans flag poking out of it.

Trying to plan for this year's London Book Fair has been a bit of a nightmare, given the hoops that students have had to jump through. I'm still very excited to attend, but it'd be nice to feel slightly more welcomed. Instead I feel as if the vibe has been instead to deter students from attending. 🤐

It's beyond me why folks in the publishing industry are now trying to pawn off *reading literature* to AI. If gracing a handful of writers with actual, human feedback seems like too much effort, then I might suggest a career change...

Jumped up when I saw the #WIPSnips word today because I've got the word 'cherry' in this draft at least five times, for some reason. Here's my favourite use, though!
Snip reads:
"“Phoenix?”
I looked up from my hole and saw a bright light peering in. Roxanne’s curious face, her curls falling down, and her stained lips smiling widely. I could smell the sweet alcohol off her breath. It was cherry and strawberry and pomegranate. Her hands wrapped around the concave of my cheekbones and her sharp manicure almost broke my skin. She was like an angel preparing to pull me up from the grave.
“Yeah?” I finally asked."

A British pensioner whose bland sandwiches gained him unexpected fame in China has died. Keith Brown, a retired engineer known on Chinese social media as
"Old Dry Keith", became a hit when his Chinese wife Zhang Jian began to post videos of him assembling the ham and cheese sandwiches he liked to eat. Chinese observers were grimly fascinated by his dry, boring sandwiches, and his gentle, stoic manner - and he built up a cult following. "We go from questioning the dry old man, to understanding the dry old man, to becoming the dry old man," observed one cultural commentator.
"The old man is us, and his dry lunch is our dry life."

Image of the latest issue of From Glasgow to Saturn (FGTS) showing my film review titled 'Autistic Joy in Punch-Drunk Love: A Film Revew'.

Review contents:
There is something to be said about consuming media as an autistic individual. The constant holding of breath, waiting for cruelty, and wincing when it is exacted upon a character that acts just like you – only made worse when it is cheered on by the audience you sit beside. I felt a familiar dread when I sat in front of the TV glow depicting Barry Egan, the protagonist of ‘Punch-Drunk Love’, watching him have violent meltdowns and squirm under the thumb of his painfully neurotypical family members, living a life that echoed my own.
Oh Barry, I thought. They’re going to do something to you, and I don’t know what.
Yet, despite knowing of his impending doom, I could not tear my eyes off of the most succinct representation of myself I had seen since I projected onto similarly misunderstood violents like Pearl or Carrie. There was a warm familiarity as I watched him wearing the same clothes every day, forever obsessing over his niche business, mumbling, and growing his personal collection of pudding cups. Especially the way he whispers down the phone and reaches through the early-2000s digital ether for some sense of human connection. I watched a reflection of the life I lead (a paradox between the mind-numbingly boring and the intensely emotional) and held my breath whenever a new player entered it. I soon treated Barry’s life as I treated my own - with intense paranoia.
Will they hurt you? Do they know you? Will they think you are strange? Will my interests be critiqued? My appearance? Will they mock you? Will you know? What will I say? Will they love me?
I surely thought the catalyst of this destruction came in the form of Barry’s love interest, Lena Leonard[...] (Rest omitted due to alt text limit)
