Just read a reviews of a book that complained about there being no (or insufficient) world building, and realised what they actually mean is that it's not spelled out explicitly in a big unsubtle infodump. One reviewer actually complained, "the world building is just reading the story"! #booksky

Good morning Bluesky ☀️ My grandad told me he saw the Titanic - from the outset he warned all the people that the ship would sink, but nobody listened to him. He knew he was right and didn't give up. He warned them again & again, until eventually they kicked him out of the cinema.

The Titanic sinking under a moonlit sky.

The Luddites loved technology. They owned looms at home and would ‘mod’ them to count threads. Their battle was against worker exploitation. The degradation of their rights, safety and wages. They were against a handful of rich businessmen owning the means of production. Sound familiar?

Animals feel pain – that much is obvious. Isn't it? Descartes's Dog, by Gareth Southwell, investigates the roots of our modern view of the mind, Descartes’s view of animals, AI, and the persisting puzzle of consciousness. Available from WoodPigpress.com and a range of online retailers. #booksky

Why are publishers so obsessed with genre? At WoodPig Press we don't care if your book is a neat fit for marketplace, or "what's hot right now". Is your book a weird mishmash? All the better! We will judge your book on its own merits. Photo by Kate Mishchankova on Unsplash #booksky #books
