Tonight at our Board of Estimate & Taxation meeting we deadlocked on deciding the maximum levy for the City and the Parks. I voted in full support of the park board’s levy request and the city’s request throughout every single amendment brought forward, but we could not find consensus on that.

My argument is simple; our parks are worth it. In the last few years our park levy has been consistently under what we need to fully function. This led to rec center cuts. We are facing cuts again, while the city has been far less fiscally prudent. Gift link: www.startribune.com/mpls-green-s...

My statement on Minneapolis Public Schools’ proposed “school transformation” plan.
Text above a signature reading: “STATEMENT FROM SENATOR OMAR FATEH ON MINNEAPOLIS PUBLIC SCHOOLS' PROPOSED
"SCHOOL TRANSFORMATION" PLAN:

"This decision is too big and affects too many families across the city to be made quickly.

This plan puts two schools in my district on the chopping block: Heritage Academy and Field Elementary, which has been open for more than a century.

The district has not made the case for these closures. Initial cost savings they have floated are insignificant to their financial picture, and no full analysis has been conducted of fallout effects.

This kind of major disruption deserves proper engagement from parents, educators and administrators, neighborhood and city leaders, and the current timeline doesn't allow for that.
The board should delay this vote and let those voices be heard.””

Statement on the MPS Transformation plans made public last week
Black text on a white background, reading:
“Over the past week, I have spoken with a number of constituents who have expressed great concerns about the plans Minneapolis Public Schools announced to potentially close several schools around the city.

There have been questions about how this would impact park programming and before/after school care through Rec Plus. As we await further information from MPS about these impacts, it has become clear that the community has not felt heard or supported in the communication of these potentially seismic transformation plans.

As a Minneapolis resident and as a fellow elected, I urge the Directors of the MPS School Board to delay a vote on these plans until the community at large has been engaged and understands the potential impacts on their families, friends, and neighborhoods. If the vote cannot be delayed, I urge them to vote against these massive changes- this can be discussed again in the future, but closing the schools will have immediate consequences for the affected communities.

I appreciate the constraints and challenges they’re facing. Delaying this vote and helping community partners understand the way this will impact our joint efforts will be a net positive. I look forward to working with them going forward to see how MPRB and MPS can work together to serve our communities.”

Dear Community, We will be having a board meeting tomorrow June 17, 2026 in which Resolution 2026-114 will be now introduced to the whole board.
Flyer of public statement by commissioner Carvajal Moran:

Dear Community,

We will be having a board meeting tomorrow June 17, 2026 in which Resolution 2026-114 will be now introduced to the whole board.

On May 20, 2026 the board received a presentation from the National Park Service, the Minnesota Historical Society, and a Dakota community about the cultural significance of Mni Owe Sni; it being sacred for Dakota people.

With this information now being public, it was necessary to bring policy forward around the use of the Minnehaha Off-Leash Recreation Area.

Therefore, on June 3rd, Resolution 2026-114 was first introduced to our Planning Committee and was passed in the committee.

This resolution directs the superintendent to initiate a process to decommission the Minnehaha-Off Leash Recreation Area. In this process, we will also seek other alternatives sites for additional off-leash recreation opportunities, and for a process for community feedback on amenities and locations of those alternate sites.

In the resolution, “decommissioning” means in this would no longer be an area where K9s can be off-leash. It will still remain open to visitors and their leashed pet, under standard MPRB rules.

I understand that this will be a change, but it is important that as a community we are receptive to sacred knowledge. This policy is brought forward to mitigate harm, particularly to our indigenous community who have historically endured so much harm.

As a commissioner, I look forward to working with my fellow commissioners, MPRB staff, and community stakeholders in finding alternative sites for an off-leash site.

With care,

Commissioner Carvajal Moran

Today is February 1st. Community is organizing mutual aid as thousands of tamilies are struggling to pay rent. As a housing navigator, youth worker, and MPRB Commissioner, I am calling on Governor Walz to enact an eviction moratorium.
ICE is kidnapping our immigrant neighbors, terrorizing our neighborhoods, parks and schools, and has murdered our legal observers. This is not normal. We are witnessing the suffering, trauma and destruction of our state.
Many families are risking their lives to go to work because they need to pay the rent. Neighbors cannot shelter in place and should not be forced into a housing court system.
Standing with our immigrant communities means enacting an Eviction Moratorium and investing in rental assistance.
In solidarity,

Yesterday, five-year-old Liam and his dad Adrian were released from Dilley detention center. I picked them up last night and escorted them back to Minnesota this morning. Liam is now home. With his hat and his backpack.

This morning, federal immigration agents publicly executed an observer at 26th and Nicollet Ave South. Observers are out in the community because they care about our immigrant neighbors. They do this out of love and helping keep families together. 1/

Here is the MPRB statement regarding the murder of a resident by ICE agents in the Whittier neighborhood this morning, and how it affects youth sports at nearby Whittier Rec Center. @amberforparks.bsky.social @olsenforparks.bsky.social @kayforparks.bsky.social @engy5150.bsky.social
We are closely monitoring the situation arising from this morning's horrific shooting of another person by Federal Immigration Enforcement agents near 26th and Nicollet.

We have talked with staff onsite at Whittier Recreation Center which is near the shooting location and where basketball games are taking place. For the safety of staff, parents and participants, all games and permitted events at Whittier Rec Center are cancelled this afternoon and tomorrow. Environmental Stewardship staff/crews have/are being deployed to other areas of the system.

Staff safety is our top concern. Police will continue patrolling park properties and CCVP staff will be checking in on nearby parks that are outside of the Whittier area.

Recreation centers are scheduled to be open until 5 p.m. Park If you are at a recreation center or other MPRB facility and feel unsafe, please contact your supervisor and/or the on-call Service Area Manager for assistance.

The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is active, and we are participating.

Thank you all for helping keep neighbors safe. This fundraiser will help families in Phillips which is super vulnerable to immigration enforcement. This will help with the cost of rent, utilities, groceries, medical expenses, and other financial needs these families may face. gofund.me/65db13d94

Today, I am thinking about my dear friend @kayforparks.bsky.social who is showing up to every park and whistling ICE out of MPRB Property, and also showing up to support families after they are kidnapped. I am so grateful for you. Thank you for advocating for the safety of our youth and families.
