Am confused --no way you are that gullible. Europe has had these protections from the beginning of data and internet security. It's so obviously a monetization question and why our (in the US ) data is simply up for sale.. nothing can be done🙄

Am shocked at how much the delivery (the app?) and podcast itself suck. As a quasi-admiring reader+supporter of TNR, this shitshow of difficult interfaces, repetitive journalism, and omipresent AI voices (Sargent and guest sound pretty AI themselves tbh) are killing my vestigial faith in journalism

There’s a massive immigration operation in Memphis right now, but you may not have heard about it. Why? Community members face retaliation for trying to spread the word out, a lawsuit alleges.

Memphis is “under full-blown occupation” by ICE. Here’s why you may not know that.

Good piece, but doesn’t quite say clearly that Dem leadership is on the oligarch/financial system side, as it ever was. Still, “The VRA was the nice version. The version that said: here’s a door, it’s open, your voice has weight, use it. They’ve closed the door. They closed it on purpose...”

It’s worth noting that, absent further intervention by SCOTUS, VRA §2 claims can still succeed post-Callais if the plaintiffs can show discriminatory intent by lawmakers.

Re the dove and John Kruk, reminds me of the brothers on my husband’s dude league team in Northern Cali (Livermore folk, guys in their 30s -40a mostly). They’d played with Johnson in high school and apparently it was insane—he often had no clue where the ball was going (at 100+mph;)

The fact that people try to shoot Trump or any politician is not evidence that they stand for anything of value. Voters fell under the spell of a bizarre hypnotism in 2024 following Butler and now we’re enduring the consequences.

Hearing the head of the WHCA—who just days ago participated in a Paramount dinner “honoring” Trump— say tonight that the First Amendment is “fragile” because of a random shooter rather than because of the president sitting next to her on the podium is, I guess, exactly as pathetic as you’d expect.

You either have bodily autonomy, or you don't. You don't get to decide one group of people shouldn't have bodily autonomy without the justifications and mechanisms used to strip that autonomy being immediately used to strip bodily autonomy from others. Either we all have it or none of us do.

The killing of Iranian children during an illegal war is an impeachable offense (not to mention a grave crime) and Congress should really act like it. 15 Republicans in the Senate could end this nightmare before it somehow gets even worse.

By the way, for those of you not in MN: Homan’s strategy was to withdraw some agents, so it felt like we were in the denouement of the crisis, and then escalate hard against observers. They’re being incredibly aggressive with observers now. National media may not want to check out just yet

Not sure what minimum wage laws can do (believe in them fwiw) but am absolutely certain benign employers respecting and paying fairly for their workers’ labor will help! The system may die but we can try to do better in the meantime.

Thank you for working to raise the minimum wage and to make your campaign an equitable workplace. Seriously! But $25/ hr isn’t “thriving” and $20/hr is barely enough to support a person in most US housing markets, esp in places people want to live.

Lawyers can't reach clients in ICE detention. I've heard it anecdotally, but scale of issue is horrifying. Bloomberg Law is a legal trade pub so many may miss this. Screenshot from their CA newsletter summarizes "bleak" situation for justice and rule of law. news.bloomberglaw.com/litigation/l...
What we found is bleak. Attorneys told us they’re struggling to get information in to or out of ICE and Customs and Border Protection facilities, which are holding nearly 69,000 people this month. And detainees often are forced to choose between remaining in crowded, squalid conditions or leaving the country immediately.

Judges in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles have ordered the government to facilitate attorney-client communications at Homeland Security buildings. But attorneys say that doesn’t always happen. Even if detainees get the option, some worry they’ll be punished if they take it.

I pointed out that longheld standards of academic freedom as a constitutional 1st amendment right and possible cross-spectrum political wedge-could be proclaimed and institutions could plant their flag on protecting those freedoms for students and faculty alike. Still think that has legs fwiw…

I’ve had discussions with admin in the TAMU system, who know it is appalling and wrong. But they too are told to lie. So they try to hold onto some ethical academic standards without calling attention to their institutions. Authoritarianism indeed.

How does an instructor and academic program not lie or misrepresent facts and established knowledge under the regime of surveillance, rules, and punishment the TAMU system has invoked? What happens to students who need and deserve this knowledge?

In TX, most foundational truths (and data and feminist knowledge) in WGS have been declared illegal. Only 2 genders and 2 sexes, male and female and we know what that means, etc. No race, no queerness , no history. How does a prof “teach” with those constraints?

So terrible —and so unsurprising. Hate this for TAMU, for students and faculty in Texas, and for what it foretells. But have been wondering what fac and programs should do when told to lie?

This is “Operation PARRIS,” a top reason that DHS is in Minneapolis. The goal is to arrest 5,600 lawfully present refugees and take them to detention centers in Texas to be interrogated about their status. There is NO investigation first. They are arresting everyone; grab first, question later.
