Yesssssssss I am not super fond of the mushroom personally but I think that’s my Asian food tastes coming out. It’s too strong and not that more fresh umami flavor I want from mushrooms.

Ten things you can do to start the revolution, right now: 1. Make sure your neighbors have food. If they don't, and you have a little extra money, buy them some. 2. Make sure your neighbors have gas to get to work. 3. Do you have an undocumented neighbor who can't go out? Run their errands.

Humans do be like that a lot 😆 I think in my case it’s also “if you made me grieve then at least make it on purpose, accidentally ripping my heart out just makes me angry without something I can fix because I can’t fix your incompetence or lack of caring”.

Describing “not catching whatever the sick person has and what’s going around” as “short term benefit” is certainly a choice as a doctor. 😭 who gave this joker a license to practice medicine? His practice doesn’t seem to be any good.

Yes, yes this. It’s not even necessarily an outlet, for me, it’s a sort of meaning? Like someone murdered someone out of jealousy. It’s awful but there was a reason behind it. A whole school collapsing in an earthquake and killing all the town’s children would incapacitate me with grief and WHY.

katjr @katjyr.myatproto.social · 15h
And at least with the US and gun laws and genocide… Usually premeditated murder is facilitated by other systemic things, like police not taking domestic abuse seriously, and that’s a different upsetting. Which manslaughter it’s often “you had one job: to not suck at following the rules”.

katjr @katjyr.myatproto.social · 15h
Trying really hard not to come across as “it’s okay to murder if you’re competent and have a reason for it”. 🥲
010 1
katjr @katjyr.myatproto.social · 15h
Right?? Like again obviously both are bad and extremely upsetting, but for me “you didn’t do your job right and people died” is way more meaningless and therefore more upsetting than say “awful human being killed a bunch of people”. Because at least with the latter that was the goal. Bad evil goal.

katjr @katjyr.myatproto.social · 15h
Morally, I think the murderer is a far worse person, no question. Legally, intent absolutely should matter. As a bystander, it upsets me more if someone failed to follow the rules or failed to be sufficiently careful with a lethal object (SUV) and caused someone death.

My brother: you’re making sense but I feel like you’re wrong somehow and there’s probably a philosopher somewhere who has an example I can use to refute your logic but I can’t think of anything right now. Me: just admit I’m right. It is way worse to fail and kill someone.

A car blew through a red light yesterday and nearly hit a little boy. I was so shook after cuz if that little boy had started across the crosswalk when the signal light changed, as was his right, he would’ve been killed by that car. And I think that is way worse than stabbing someone on purpose.
210 2
katjr @katjyr.myatproto.social · 15h
So murder is like, someone killed someone else and that’s bad but at least it’s like they did it for a reason and they had a plan and then they pulled it off and that was bad but it’s not like you FAILED at something and now someone is dead by accident. That’s just worse in my book.
110 1
katjr @katjyr.myatproto.social · 15h
Okay guys, I think I blanked my brother’s mind, cuz we were talking about intentions and if they mattered, and he pulled up the example of how murder is different from manslaughter… And I was like actually I think manslaughter is worse. Kev: uh, legally… Me: oh I know, legally, but philosophically?

Some of the strongest maintainers of the patriarchy are women. This is an important thread. Look in yourself and your behaviours to see what you could be doing to excuse, support, or justify the oppressive behaviours of men, family, and social culture that enhance patriarchal and chauvinist control

Pedestrians…. As a cyclist biking on the sidewalk, I try not to be an asshole but could y’all STOP WALKING ON THE BIT MARKED AS THE BIKE PATH FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY. Also why do people randomly lurch backwards or sideways when walking 😭 I desperately do not want to collide with you but if you insist!

Motorcyclists as a whole have no regard for the life or limb of anyone and it’s aggravating. People in cars are privileged assholes who not only disregard pedestrian right of way in the crosswalk BUT EXTRA DISREGARDS IT WHEN RAINING. My dude, we are out in the elements and you are not.

Almost no one understands maybe we should, as a country that drives on the right, also use that concept when walking or biking. The number of times people have almost run into me on a bike when I’m staying on the right side of the lane is mind boggling. You should be on your right side, my left.

I got the feeling a lot of Taiwan work culture is built off the assumption that there is always going to be cheap takeout so it’s fine if people work overtime and then grab food on the way home. But is that always going to be the case? And are wages going to keep pace with food and labor inflation?

katjr @katjyr.myatproto.social · 15/10/2026
I also wonder if this is more indications that we really are moving towards a society that doesn’t have the wherewithal or willingness to cook and what that means. This isn’t trad wife musings; with Taiwan’s abysmal birth rate, who is going to be cooking the takeout and delivery?

It’s complicated and I get that. But I really used to love browsing the supermarket shelves and now it’s an entire aisle of ice cream, another entire aisle of local instant noodles, an aisle of imported instant ramen, and now it’s just far less fun to wander as a cook 🙃

I have some Feelings about how the imported foods section in the hypermarket formerly known as Carrefour is now appearing heavily weighted towards instant noodles, snacks, candies, and other things not commonly used as ingredients. Yes, I can get my banana peppers off Shopee, perhaps, but I am sad.

I am also bad with names and dates… History is hell in that regard. Don’t get me started on how all the western kings and queens have the same names. Louis the sixteenth? Truly? Or did it stop at fifteenth? I love history as stories and human connections and stuff but the names and dates 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ohhh... so, is this why pre-decimal European money worked the way it did? Decimals don't make sense in a ratio world? (Basically the only book I've read on the history of measurement is Hasok Chang's amazing Inventing Temperature; frantically googling)
A short excerpt from Jim Tolpin and George Walker's By Hand and Eye: "The language of the artisans was all about finding, generating and laying out whole-number ratios with a compass and straightedge. They were not using rulers to work to arithmetic derivations of a numbered measurement. So while using a scale based on one to 10 works fine to resolve numerical formulas, you do often end up with decimal fractions of a whole number. That would require an artisan to lay out to a numbered ruler – not to mention having to deal with decimal places. Another downside in using base-10 is that 10 doesn’t readily break down in whole-number fractions: You are limited to 1/5 and 1/2. A one-to-12 scale, on the other hand, gives you 1/6, 1/4, 1/3 and 1/2 – the ratios of which can be easily counted out on one hand (thank you ancient Babylonians) as shown in the drawing below. Note that you use your thumb as the counting cursor."

Not unexpectedly The AI Con is a bit simplistic / inaccurate on the history of gender in weaving but the Luddites only take up two pages in an otherwise very dense chapter so I'll allow it. It takes two bad shortcuts: - Weaving as mostly domestic pre-automation; - Domestic weaving as women's work

Actually, for those of us who know life only gets more complicated after marriage and after kids… i really enjoy reading romances set after marriage. Also uh “first marriage then falling in love” is a major trope in c-fic for reasons. Also also it’s a riff off fake lovers to real romance 🤷🏻‍♀️
