so ok when your work and posts are critical of a field, pushback is expected so i'm not gonna act scandalized. however, here is something that happens repeatedly in metascience: i get verbally insulted by dudes who ultimately agree with all of my arguments. and *that* is a gendered dynamic.

It's strange how the presence of different aspects to this story is used to claim that because aspect A isn't at all what it appeared to be at first, aspect B (which is not denied) should be ignored or forgotten.

We don‘t have access to the letter that lists the claims supporting the firing nor to the documents supporting those claims. We know though that the termination has been legally challenged & has been upheld. It appears not to be as simple a case as a prof having a sexual relationship with a student.
Sex between teachers and students is as common as medium double-doubles. If it is automatically a firing offense, tens of 1000s of academics must go.

metascience loves criticizing how others do research but till this day has not been able to find a way to engage with serious critique directed at it. it's all knee-jerk reactions, language policing, dismissal, and distractions. not a good look.

My current little kink of the academic kind is to refrain as much as I can from suggesting things I know I won‘t do. And to issue a breath-like hmmm when the other suggests things I know I won‘t do. That‘s how I know I‘m doomed to never become an administrator.

The Committee for Academic Freedom has launched an investigation into Professor Arday’s hiring, and appointed Steven Pinker - listed as a referee on the CV of Arday’s accuser - to the panel. Because Cambridge should not have the freedom to decide its own appointments?

I’m sorry to have to be the bad guy here but we need to recognize that we live in a compressed air thrusters world now. If you’re not finding ways to teach the critical use of compressed air thrusters in your classroom, you’re setting your students up to fail when you could be setting them up to fly

I’m pretty sure student IP and data is already being shared/ used and they just wanted to get retroactive “consent”. It should concern everyone that education is such a data broker honeypot, and that safeguarding does not seem to occur to schools/ FE when it comes to data.

One thing I'm noticing looking at AI funding is that there is a class of researcher who relies almost solely on industry funding and *doesn't* report it anywhere; rarely having a CV. You just find it in like university announcements.

I’m especially frustrated by the piece uncritically repeating Pangram’s “no false positives” claim when I know writer friends who have run their own work through & had it flag their 100% human-written sentences as machine-generated. We must doubt any company’s claim about its product having 0 fails.

But for that harm to be accepted as the result of defamation, he‘ll have to convince the judge that the other, the established misconduct doesn‘t matter all that much, that nobody ever really gets close to being fired from the uni for the kind of misconduct he was found to have committed.

I suspect it‘s also part of trying to establish the serious harm he suffered from the alleged defamation. For this aspect the harm is he lost his position and with it his entire ability to do this job—after an experience like this one doesn‘t ever get rehired elsewhere as a creative writing prof.

Defending him against unfounded claims of sexual assault and finding various ways to support him in the process of defending himself—I entirely get that. Criticizing the uni for its handling of the case—totally fair game. But this is more and different than that and it is very weird.

This piece seems to be forgetting that despite no evidence of sexual assault and despite AB engaging in multiple fishy maneuvers, from the uni‘s view she was also a student in a program where the chair had engaged in an illicit sexual relationship with her & had been found to act in a harassing way.

Second part.
On Monday morning, after a wait of nearly a decade, I arrived at the courthouse early for the start of the trial. Then I got an email from a friend: “Holy shit, you have to see what the Globe did.”

I ran to three corner stores, and guess what? Corner stores no longer sell newspapers. I had to walk to London Drugs to get a copy of the Globe. The reporter’s piece was on the front page, and when I opened the paper, there was Chelsea Rooney’s full apology, printed on page 3 as editorial content. On Friday, I’d been working on a story about how the Globe refused to run the abridged version as an ad. On Monday morning, it ran in full.

That evening, Gary Mason wrote an excellent op-ed in the Globe.

Hm. Hm.
On the Friday night before the trial, I broke the news of Chelsea Rooney’s apology. What people don’t yet know is that an abridged version of that apology was originally supposed to run in the Globe and Mail as an ad. The Globe refused to publish it. It was a major letdown, and I expected the paper wouldn’t even send a reporter to cover the trial.

In the end, the National Post happily published the abridged apology on Saturday, and followed it up with excellent reporting by Amy Hamm and Jamie Sarkonak.

When people brush this fact away with reference to a low error rate is that, that's kinda infuriating from a research perspective. If a system that researchers are asked to rely on produces errors, then there must be mechanisms for those errors to be corrected. And corrections must be able to last.
