If correct this looks like a perfect storm of UK institutional decay: simultaneous failures of diplomacy, parliamentary scrutiny and media oversight, creating a health and fiscal timebomb. Genuinely shocking

There's been lots of speculation about how much of Burnham's enthusiasm for devolution will survive contact with No.10. How he runs his Cabinet will tell us a great deal about that. END

Starmer neither set the direction for his cabinet nor empowered them to act on their own initiative; the worst of both worlds. Burnham will now have to decide what sort of PM he's going to be, and assemble a frontbench team that can actually do things

Unlike Starmer, however, Cameron empowered his cabinet to act. Osborne drove through the austerity agenda; Gove reshaped education policy in ways that are still haunting us 15 years later (unfortunately)

One of the problems with Starmer was something he had in common with David Cameron - a sense that he was the right sort of chap to run the country, without quite knowing what for. A benignly middle class version of Cameron's 'born to rule' mentality

I'm sorry but it's very funny to me that the legislature of a G7/P5 country of 70 million is currently drafting the "Fuck This One Guy in Particular Act of 2026." Also, imagine tolerating a system of privilege so entrenched you need to rewrite centuries-old rules just to get at one douchebag.
