I've been working with @eam0.bsky.social, James Brunton, and @slowtech2000.bsky.social on a systemic critique of EdTech practices using a model for degrowth pragmatism to effect meso-level change. Clare and I developed this figure to help illustrate the theoretical approach...
Infographic outlining a model for degrowth pragmatism using a tree with visible roots

Micro level (leaves on tree): Vetter’s Matrix of Convivial Technology (2018) Appropriateness/bio-interaction, Relatedness/adaptability, Accessibility, Life-cycle/infrastructures

Meso level (tree trunk) Degrowth pragmatism: Reframe problems from individual behaviour to systemic conditions; Provide non-binary, context-sensitive solutions; Embed care, conviviality, and sustainability into EdTech practices; Enable incremental yet transformative practice changes

Micro level (roots of tree) Jones’ degrowth vectors (2020): Simplicity, Conviviality, Care, Ritual destruction of accumulation

I have done everything possible to keep Mary cool during this heatwave. This evening I found her in the hottest room in the house, at the hottest time of day, perched upon a corduroy stool that had been pushed into the last available sun spot before the sun started to set.

Late last semester, I wrote a review of @neilselwyn.bsky.social Digital Degrowth for @pdse.bsky.social. It was a slightly daunting task considering how much I respect Neil's work, and I hope I have done it justice. Thanks so much for your generous contributions and scholarship, Neil. rdcu.be/e0nbV

Landed in Zurich today for the European Conference on Critical EdTech Studies and managed to fulfil of my teenage dreams - visiting the birthplace of Dadaism at Cabaret Voltaire. I spent a few hours looking at the exhibits, reading in the Dada Library, and immersing myself in the space. #ECCES

Their discussion around renewable assignments and resources led me to dig up my now 20 year old class wiki where my students developed collaborative resources and assignments while developing research and information literacy skills. It was a bit crude as it was my first year teaching (2005-2006).

I was in Connecticut for the week and made it to my favourite independent bookshop, R.J. Julia in Madison. I only bought these two books by @ruha9.bsky.social, of which I already own digital copies, but I couldn’t resist it. I’ll have to get them signed someday, like Race after Technology.
